All,

I have been wanting to replace the (2) factory horns on my 97 4Runner for a while to get rid of the high "beeping" sound!

Question is, I'm not sure what to go to?

Any suggestions? I'm looking for something deeper in tone (I think) and am not sure if I need air or electric or what???

It's is a Hella dual Trumpet Air horn set, part #85105. You can get these for about $26 at a decent Auto Parts store.

I don't care how it sounds to me, I only want the dumb mf's in my way to take more notice when I use in rush hour here for idiots in my way!

Anyone else have any suggestions? JC Whitney has a bunch of them all for pretty cheap, thus my question.

Same thing but looking to fit the cramped space in the 1st gen, where else could these be mounted securely, audibly and out of sight?

 

I have Hella Supertones, p/n 85115. I do not recommend these. Same type of "beep", just louder. Also expensive, $70.32 including shipping from Susquehanna MotorSports.

 

Vince has a set of the airhorns on his 1st gen mounted in between the grille.
I think he may have some pics if he sees this post.

I run two Napa Freeway or Highway Blasters as they are called.
They have seperate tones from each other, and are quite loud.
I think they run about $12 each, can't remember.

I had swapped in a spiral shell shaped low tone Trak Auto horn in my 86, took some doing but it fits between the grill and the rad. My 89 though has the separate cooler, and even less space between it and the side of the grill space, don't think it would hold even that shell horn. Maybe underneath, betweeen engine and bottom skid plate, aimed out of the skid plate slots?

Like the horns, they definately have the "HEY! MOVE IT!" tone to them...

 

Ditto to what HBum says. I have the Hella Supertones and they sound like they should be on a BMW or a VW rather than a 4Runner (or any truck for that matter).

I will say though that the horns are LOUD, but more of a piercing loud than a deep old Caddy loud. My alarm went off the other day and I could hear it and people walking away from my 4runner.

You might be able to wedge them behind the bumper, or mount the in the engine bay with the trumpets facing down to the ground.

I mounted mine on a fabbed up aluminium bracket behind the grill.

 

I'm with Cory, I just bought a couple Freeway Blaster horns from Advance auto for $12 apiece, and they're quite loud. I just had to remove the grill (kind of PIA, used long skinny screwdriver), and they easily replaced the stock ones, although I had to shorten the passenger side bracket.

I've had air horns a couple times, and they just aren't reliable, they totally broke on my Supra, and the pump quit on another set.

 

I've had good luck with my set of airhorns.

I also have a wav file on there that lets you LISTEN to the stock horns compared to the new AIRHORNS.

 

Yeah I've got a set of the Hella that Dr. Z posted. No pictures, haven't gotten around to taking the grill off to do it. Everyone know how much of a PITA it is to do that.

They do sound like they should be on some European import, but it's great seeing the look on some people's face when they hear it.

 

Another vote for the Freeway Blasters.

They were cheap (around $10.00) and have worked well for me.

I got them from Autozone and kept exchanging them until I found the right tone I was looking for.

Friends have compared my horns to sounding like a fog horn on a ship, you definately know when I'm coming.

 

I did'nt like my Runner's horn...come to think of it, it was like the ROADRUNNER ...meep-meep. It was ok loud, but I wanted a tone that matched the truck. I added the NAPA Freeway Blaster horn to my existing 2 horns. I do remember I had to try several times to get all 3 to work. It added the correct 'harmony' (3 part harmony :alien: ) so now it's louder and not so thin sounding. I can still 'tap' it and not be too loud...but when I lean into it...hehe, you'll hear it.

Are you guys wiring these horns to a seperate switch or into the existing horn. Do these cheap horns come with wiring and instructions??

 

I figured this out, thanks Jason B for the write-up. I ordered some 128db horns from JC Whitney. Hope I can find somewhere to mount em on my 2nd Gen. Anyone have any examples??

 

Hey Lifer, can you specify which horns you ended up with? I'm looking at just two connected to existing wires, maybe the really low and the low, or low and mid, did you mess with these combos?
Yeah, the road runner beep is almost counter productive, might be better to keep quiet than whine like that...

 

I'm embarrassed to admit that my Escort horns are way more macho than my 4Runner. I've been experiementing with the idea of swapping a couple Ford horns into the 4Runner. I know the wiring harned it different, and I haven't had a chance to really look into it.
Can someone tell me, if I put Ford horns on a Toyota, will my rig burst into flames?

 

Sorry, I cant remember the notes (A, B, etc?), but I do know it was the lowest tone available.
I messed with the combos, but the end of the horn blast would always end in a high pitch and I didnt care for it.
As far as wiring and installation I used the stock locations and existing wiring, easy install.

One piece of advice, remember to install the horns with the opening facing down so they dont fill with water/condensation and short out.
