High Flow Cats?

Has anyone installed an aftermarket high flow catalitic converter on their 4Runner? Has anyone removed it altogether? If anyone has done it, please explain what you feel are the advantages and disadvantages of doing it? Thanks,

I bet your truck would be pretty damn loud if you completely took the cat off. Not to mention it is illegal and bad for the environment..

I first had a custom catback magnaflow system installed with 2.25 in. and yes there was a little more get up and go and the sound was not all that loud. Then a month later, I had the Car-sound Cat installed (Magnaflow's high flow cat), with 4 in input/output. the size that fits engine sizes up to a 5.7 liter. I notice that the sound was actually reduce some but the truck has even more noticable acceleration. and the engine runs smoother, and seems to pull with less effort. However my gas mpg did not increase, maybe because I now find that with this new found power my foot is a little heavier then before. Got ta love that freeway merging. This setup was what Stan at Stan's headers in Washington recommended. He swears by this Cat convertor, has it even on his new 2002 dodge durango.

So far I'm happy with it.

When I had my turbo 4runner, I installed an aftermarket Random Technology cat. along with 2.5" pipe and a Dynomax muffler. It netted me 14HP(According to my G-tech Pro meter), but that might be because the turbos react a lot better to improved airflow.

Did you purchase a HI FLOW CAT yet?

Chris,

Did you make a CAT purchase yet? I am looking into a HI FLOW CAT for my 98 Supercharged 4Runner. I have checked out the "XTREAMEFLOW" and "MAGNAFLOW" websites. I can not find any data to indicate the percentage improvement in flow as compared to stock. I just wrote to XTREAMFLOW tech. support and asked them the question directly but I wonder if you found anything out in your investigation.

Yeah, I sort of stopped looking for right now, but I would like to know the website for extreameflow if you have it. I want to get a full exahust at some point, which would include the catalytic converter, but it's pretty pricy, and from what I understand the headers are a pain in the butt to do.

I just don't have the money at this time to do it, and I don't just want to replace the cat and muffler right now, because as soon as I do the full replacement, the tubing will probably be bigger, and I'll need a new muffler and cat again, anyway. Magnaflow is the only one I recall looking at, but I'd like to see the Extreameflow ones too if you know the website.

Thanks Man! I wonder if there is some camparison that could show the flow rates as you mention. That would cool. Let us know what you find out. Have you also emailed Magnaflow about the same thing?

I'm going to try a O2 simulator and get rid of the cat seeing as we don't have emissions here in FL.

What do you mean by O2 simulator? How does this work, because obviously this would be better than running even a high flow cat woulnd't it. We don't have emissions in TN either, so I would love to see how this works too. Explain, please!

I just got an email from ExtremeFlow, and the part number for my 1998 is part# XFS610 Just wanted to let everyone know! It says they will flow 68% more exhaust gases, but if no cat flows 100% better, then I'm totally open with it if it works.

I've got a Car Sound cat which I think is made by Magna flow, with a Flowmaster 50 series muffler and 2.25 pipes.
It sounds good, and the performance is better.
The truck seems to pull better through the rpm range.
It idles a little better also.
The biggest improvement seems to be in the low-middle rpm range.
Mine was $100 for the cat, and $100 for the Flow- both stainless steel, and used aluminized pipes to connect.

Guys,
Im not trying to be a tree hugger here...but dont take off your cats it only adds to the pollution that we all have to deal with.
It can't really make all that much difference in performance anyway.
Remember, a 3.0 is not a late 60s big block V-8 and never will be,
be and keep your cats, just get a high flow set-up.

Just my opinion

I completely agree. I am no environmental freak either, but I think that every little bit we can do to help, we should.

O2 simulator

It hooks up to your second O2 sensor with 3 wires. You leave the O2 in and get rid of the cat. The part goes for $45 I think. I'm going to put mine in as soon as I get my headers back. Hopefully this week.

Where do you get the part, and what are you going to put in the gap the cat occupied?

cat and exhaust

I just had stock muffler and tail pipe replace last week. I went with a "pro-flow" 220 and a 2 1/4 in tail pipe. A high flow cat was another $100 and I was told I could put that in later for little extra cost. I am pleased with the new muffler - sound and better pulling power. Mileage is up abit also but I keep wanting to hear the sound of the engine running up the revs
