Well, yes and no. It depends on the vehicle and it depends on the condition of the stock cat. But if you were to take a properly working stock cat and replace it with a high flow cat, on most vehicles you will not see a difference.

However, on many turbocharged vehicles boost can be increased due to less backpressure, which in turn increases power, generally speaking.

Now in this case, he said he had a bad cat, so a high flow cat ends up being the best way to go. You should see the price difference between a new stock cat and a high flow Carsound cat. Yikes!

His name is Clay Rardon, I am pretty shocked that there are multiple clays, and at that play hockey in durango. The Clay i know, isnt originally from durango, is a normal size guy but really good shape ( its hard for me because everyone seems pretty small if they are under 200pounds ) and is/was a really good hockeyplayer.

Heck I wonder if you know me, I was a pretty big fourwheeling guy in town and I had a huge K5 blazer that was black and blue that sat of 35inch tires. I was real active on search and rescue. Climbed alot and worked at the climbing wall up on the college.

Oh yeah, and talk to the guys at durango muffler shop - on main and 15th? or maybe its still florida road then? i dunno. I cant remember the guys name, but they are reallyl good and helped my out big time and gave me a hell of a deal to boot.

Name rings a bell, but can't place him. It'll prob hit me when I see him out there. I might have bumped into you, after all this is a small town. I bet some friends of mine would know ya'. I know some guys at Firestone, Big-O, and the Quick Lube. They'd never forget a rig that big. I moved here 8 years ago, so I bet we did bump into each other at least once. A good friend of mine, ok a hot chick that I was dating, moved up to boulder just a few days ago... ...in search of 'adventure' WTF is that? Grrrrrrr If you see a cute 5'6" brown curly with highlighted hair with REALLY short pinkys driving a green jeep wrangler, that's her. Damn it... The first NICE chick who is good looking and isnt a stuck up bitch has to move 2000 miles away! I need to go pump some more iron damn it...

Anyhow I have a carsound hiflow cat on my yota now. At the time I was getting a NOXIOUS smell on accelleration and horrible gas milage so I swung by a stealership. They said CAT CAT CAT CAT CAT as I thought o2 sensor o2 sensor o2 sensor. They also quoted me 650 to replace it, I told em where to stick it...lol Bought the hiflow unit and when we pulled the stocker it was still clear, just not a loose as the high flow unit. I said 'f-it put the hiflow on.' Gave me a bit more power on the highway and a good deal of milage back.

Steve

get rid of it, if no emission laws, thats what i did, 2 1/4 straight back into a flowmaster (dont care for the flows much but dont have any $$ into it) sounds nice, and a little bit better on engine wear, and fuel economy

I can't recall the guy a Big-O, but he was the manager. Real great guy, had a blazer too. He helped me with almost everything and had the guys at durango muffler hook me up. They also finished my lift for me - one of the rear hangers was frozen on and needed to be plasma cut off. I had to leave for a climbing trip and hadnt finished so they helped me out, and it would be hard to forget as i drove it there open headers and the front lifted and the rear stock.
Yeah the chances of not running into someone is almost impossible around durango. I miss that place so much

Ha ha ha. I went there too. You will not be wheeling to much around durango when you have moab and farmington soooo close.

Some technical stuff here. First of all, cats don't die, they're murdered. Before spending a bunch of money on any cat, make sure your fuel trim numbers are good and that you don't have some other engine problem that is "murdering" your cat. Granted that the engine is in good shape, the cat you choose is simply a matter of choice since you are lucky enough to live in an area without smog laws. That said, yes a cat can be restrictive and a hi-flo cat would be the way to go in my opinion. As for gas mileage, the cat won't make a difference unless you have 2 O2 sensors, one before the cat and one after the cat. If you only have one o2s in front of the cat and you are getting bad gas mileage because of the cat this tells me that your engine has another problem and generally speaking is running rich and in turn "murdering" the cat, causing restriction, blah, blah, blah. Afterall, it's primarily your o2 sensors that are responsible for fuel trim/fuel mileage.

I made the mistake of punching my 99 tacomas cat and it sucked. gas milage went to crapp and it had no power. I had a hi flow put on from a local shop and now it smells like rotten eggs whenever I stop at a light. But I got my gas and power back.

Its cool when I drive by and the neighborhood kids try to figure out who farted.

Here's why you should not cut out your cat.

http://www.epa.gov/air/oaq_caa.html/

Cats are FEDERALLY MANDATED EQUIPMENT.

I don't give a ˟˟˟˟ what the government says. They TELL ME not to do drugs, people do them anyway. They TELL YOU OMG RUN CATS SAVE THE ENVIROMENT LOLO OMFG....when they turn a blind eye to industrial corporations polluting 6x as much as 1 car running no cat.

Think for yourself. Stop doing what Big Brother tells you is right.

Spank you...spank berry much.
There are strict smog laws in parts of Colorado. Come to the Denver metro area and the front range and they run your car on a dyno under load every 2 years to check emissions. They also have road side emission monitors and place them on highway on ramps. Just because you live in a place that does not have enough people to warrant emissions testing does not mean the whole state is that way. Denver has a bad smog problem and punching out your cat doesn't help the problem.

Yes daddy...

Dude, i didn't ask for your environmental thoughts, I asked about a good cat. That would be because i want one. If I said I want to punch out my cat, then go Gondi on me. If I say I want to install a new cat, then suggest a company. Everyone is getting on me about why a punched cat is bad...no ˟˟˟˟˟. That is why I want to replace it!! I never had to test in Denver while I was up there...wierd.

Look at the independent data. No cat = more pollution. The EPA is nabbing corporations all the time for violations and making them clean up their act.

Time to crawl out from under that rock you're living under. Ignorance is bliss.

Hockey - thanks for asking opinions on what cat to replace the punched out one with. It is admirable that you are doing the right thing. Those of us that give a crap about the environment thank you.

The EPA? You think the EPA doesn't get paid off to look the other way? Then I might use your own terminology and tell you YOUR ignorance is bliss.

Doesn't matter anyways, because if you gave a damn about the enviroment you would know that the US is low of the scale of world pollution. Look at china, mexico, they pollute way more than US.

Hummm. Man oh man. Matty Fatty doesn't understand backpressure. In any case, I agree with others in that running a cat is the right thing to do. Running straight pipe is not a good idea, no arguments. Just because the LAW doesn't mandate something doesn't make it right to do something grossly illegal or immoral. MattyFatty you should at least TRY and hold yourself to a higher standard. Your comments about other countries polluting more are simply off the mark. Fact is, that the USA per capita consumes more than anyone else, certainly more than any other advanced industrialized nation. In turn, we produce so much pollution, air, water, solid, that we should be ashamed of ourselves. We even export our trash to other countries!!! Get off the conspiracy kick. Sorry dude, but you're simply wrong.
