Hey guys, exhaust opinions?

Hey guys, how's it all going? Yeah Iam pretty bored at work here, so I thought I'd do a little research on what to do for my custom exhaust set-up.
Taking a look at Corey's page is frikkin awesome, wow....Everthing is exactly what you need to know. But..... final decision I think should include all you Yotatech'rs!! I have the 3.0 V6 on the 93 2nd Gen and Iam leaning towards getting the Dynomax super turbo mixed with a Hi-flow Cat. Now the real question is... hhmmm... Definatly upgrade size of diameter to 2.25'' but would it make it any better to go for the 2.50''? I've have done the airbox mod and do have a drop-in K-N, and by reading from Corey's page for our engine size idealy ya want 2.25'' however using the search button I've seen that other 2nd Geners with the 3.0 have gone all the way to 2.50'' Hhmmm I dont know guy's... can ya help a fella out? Iam gonna be getting it done in late October for my b-day so time is not really revelant. however all opinions are very welcome. Oh, by the way... Iam looking for HP increase with higher gas milage... ( I know it wont be huge) but also sound. I'd like it loud but not ricer loud... Also with the dynomax shorter louder right? so 18'' be good? thanks alot guys.... Lee Hathaway

If you read any of my posts, I have detailed my setup, but heres a short version.

My 90 V6 AT 4x4 had a dynomax 2.25" catback. Good quiet but throaty sound. I could not really tell if power increased. After about 2 years, I had a valve go bad. Had entire top end rebuilt, ported and polished heads, reground cams, cleaned and flow tested injectors and cleaned intake and tune up. The airbox and all for the intake remained stock. Got it all back and tested. Seemed good. More power and kick. The dynomax Muffler was rusting out and on the advice of Tim at DOA who did the head work, I had a full 2.5" system put on. Stock manifold and crossover pipe though as suggested but had 2.5" pipe welded to the single stock pipe just past the #6 cylinder collector. That fed into a 2.5" free flow cat and a 2.5" dynomax and tailpipe. When I tested again after this install at my "test track" I found I had added a full 5 to 8 mph on top end speed. This "test track" is just a streach of road between a stop sign and a road sign. Its about 2 to 3/10 of a mile. Low end torque was unaffected but 3K+ RPMs really took off. I run 30" tires with 4.10 gearing so acceleration suffers a bit, but I can still do a 13 to 13.5 second 0 to 60 time.

2cents.

I'm running a Magnaflow with 2.25". If you are looking for loud, this is not the route for you to take.

It is however throatier than stock, but still retains a stock sounding tone to it, which I love.

I have the 3.4, but I do have the Dynomax super turbo and I love it. It's not loud like previously said, but it does give it a nice low grunt which is all I wanted.

2.5" will decrease HP in the early part of the powerband and you don't want that,I personally wouldn't go over 2" with our NA 6 cylinders.

On my 4runner I was running A hiflow Aftermarket Cat from CATCO, and 2.5" from the cat back, Along with a Magnaflow muffler, My buddy had a flowmaster, which sounded horrible IMO just way too loud.
Ive tried several different mufflers on my runner the best sounding and performance is the Magnaflow, There are no baffles in the muffler its just straight through, yet it keeps the sound down to a min Unless your on the gas, When you stomp it the magnaflow really gets a beautifull throaghty sound to it. Oh also be sure if you do get the magnaflow get the stainless, They are warrantied anyway but the non stainless will rust through, Because of moisture in the packing.
This setup was on a 22re 5speed, v6 May react differently

I disagree, possibly decrease TQ in the early part of powerband, But I ran 2.5" on my 4cyl and overall the performance increase was noticeable, The 3.0 v6 has .6 liters more displacement than the 22re actually a 2.4 so wouldnt the 2.5 inch piping be warranted?

See now thats what I was thinking.... Corey, maybe you can chime in in here. Good point low430... about the fact that the Magnaflo has no baffels... I didnt realize that, but I really really like the overall sound of the dynamax. Good comments everybody!! keep em comming! Thanks alot.
cheers, Lee Hathaway

Bringing this back because I'm looking at a full catback+cat. I got a quote of $360 installed for 2.25" exhaust(includes turbo muffler and cat). How much torque would I lose going to 2.5", and how much would I gain in the upper end?

***Nevermind, I read some more and decided to stick with 2.25"***

Talking Hmmm, Gettin close to pullin the gun.

Well, as Onetricktoy just said, I think I also will be stickin to the 2.25'' pipe from da headers. I havent really seen many people sayin, "Yeah!! go to 2.5!!! do it do it do it!!!" And there are many more out there who have upgraded to 2.25 so, well, I'll stick to what I know. Although I had planned to get this fer my B-day on Oct 25 but I think Iam gonna get some new treads first. Yeah, how does 31" BRAND new BFG All Terrains sound?!? I'll get these first as it's comming up to boarding season and, well, a nice exhaust is'nt gonna save me from slippin'n'sliiiiiding!! So after x-mas is the NEW time frame for the exhaust and I'll keep ya guy's posted as to whats going on. Thanks again for all the input, I most certainly steered me in the right direction.

Cheers again, Lee Hathaway

When my engine was replaced, I had NWOR headers installed, and they hooked up to the stock cat-back. It was noticibly more powerful than the tired 125K engine. I hate to admit this part, but when I had my 2.25" high-flow cat, and 2.25" cat-back installed with the Dynamax Super-turbo muffler, it got way louder, and I could tell that it lost some low end torque.

anyone with a 3.4 suggestion i have my 35 inch spare mounted in the stock spair mount (after some modification) and now i cant have a comlete tubing after the muffler i was wondering if that is good or bad i notice that just taking of the tubing after the muffler just made my truck louder and actually felt slower so i added a small turned down tip to try to incorporate the stock back pressure any suggestions on a complete setup

Flowmaster is a great product. They last forever. Get whatever the muffler shop specifies. 2-1/2" max probably.

Yeah man, back pressure is definatly something you gonna want to have........
however, the amount of back pressure will MOST certainly DECRESE in the INCRESE of the diameter of piping. :pat: Am I right or what?
cheers, Lee Hathaway
