Herculined a few things today...

After seeing Northfacer581's thread about his Herculining job, it finally motivated me to something similar. I'm pretty sure that I enacted mass genocide on my brain cells from being around Herculiner and Xylol the whole day I was going to do Linex, but I'd rather save myself a LOT of money and do it myself. I got the full kit and I still had some leftover, probably enough to do my sliders if I really wanted to.

Rust and rubbage galore

The result of cinching a cooler in the bed for 5 days of Death Valley

Lined, sanded and ready to wipe down with Xylol

The end result this morning.

Wait! What's this? Why is he taping his rocker panels?

Oh yeah, baby

I noticed that there were a few areas that marbelized during the curing process, but I really don't feel like dragging out all the stuff to touch it up today since I spend 8 hours in one sitting doing all that stuff.

Looks good Ryan.

What did you use to apply it? I'm not sure if a cheap roller or sprayer would be best...

I'm liking this Herculiner idea. I'm pretty set on doing this to my bumpers now. Maybe even rocker panels...

The $100 kit comes with a brush and a roller w/extra pad. The roller and brush worked hand-in-hand to put it all on. Buying a quality brush would be key so that you don't have brush hairs in your Herculiner. The one in the kit was pretty good, actually. A small roller is ideal. There are a few things you need or should consider getting:

* Xylol (removes unwanted Herculiner and helps you clean things up afterwards)
* Drop cloth
* Chemical gloves
* Paint stirrer (drill not needed, just do it by hand)
* Rags

A sprayer would probably be the best way to go since you'll probably get a better coat and it'll take less time. Any overspray can be quickly nixed with a quick rub of a towel with Xylol on it. Wear long sleeves because Herculiner does NOT come off.

I used most of a gallon for 2 coats on everything. The plastic fender covers were done up too.

Hm, now I'm thinking I'd use a brush and roller to get at all the curves and corners for the front bumper a little more efficeiently than spraying it all, with all that wasted excess. The rear bumper will be easier.

I haven't heard of using xylol till this thread. I just want to make sure the herculiner is applied evenly and consistently. You're pretty happy with the application tho with your kit, right?

I just searched around and found that kit, looks neat. Even comes in different colors. I should find someone local who wants to herculine it up too and we can split the kit, have a herculine party haha
(dang i'm a yotatech nerd)

Xylol is the recommended paint remover that is used to remove any unwanted spots of Herculiner and can save any leftover Herculiner if it hardens in the can. The other colors take a little longer to dry, according to Herculiner.

Oh yeah, and one of those roller pans would be nice. Dipping the roller straight into the bucket wasn't ideal but it worked.

I am happy with the application.

Thanks.

I was going to get Wheeler's wheels until they said that it would be a couple months till they got a new batch in. Those are ProComp 16x8 wheels w/4.25 BS (steel).

ive been thinking about removing the limited flares and replacing them with the SR5 more streamline flares. which would wok out with the hurculiner because of the holes in the doors would have to be bondoed anyways

so you'd just herculine the sr5 flares and then an inch or so above them? hm...

i'll just herculine the limited style flares, pry easier that way.

i hope the herculiner sticks to your flares better than it did my buddy's bushwackers...he sanded, primed, herculined, clear coated, and it is peeling off within a month.

If you do this, I'd swap SR5 flares w/ you. Plus, I'm only a city over from you in Glendale.
