I have a 95 taco with around 110,000 miles on it. I don't think the timing belt has ever been changed and I planned on doing it in the new year. This morning on the way to work I noticed a click, click sound coming from the engine as it was being revved? Oil changes are up to date and reading full. My question is.......do you think this could be the timing belt? Also, do you think it will be safe to drive until after x-mas, as it is my only transportation and I don't think I will be able to get it into the shop until then. Thanks to all and Merry x-mas!

 

timming CHAIN sounds more like a rattle than a click... COuld be an exhaust manifold leak. Check for carbon build up on your plug wires. Could be your valves aswell.

Does the sound go away after you drive for a bit ?

 

Thanks for your reply. The sound didnt seem to go away in the 10 minute drive to work. I am in Canada as well, and it was -31 c this morning. Not sure if the cold weather may have anything to do with it. Thanks again.

 

You don't mention whether you use sythetic oil or not. It flows better at low temps and might take care of your clicking.

You also might locate the noise by using a short length of tubing or even a stick as a stethyscope.

 

I dont know much but i once had clicking comin from my engine and i had a buddy rev it as i watched and listened and it just ended up being that my sheath was cracked and hanging down and hitting the fan blades as i accelerated. super glue. problem solved. you never know.

 

I dont know what engine you have, but the 2.7L engine is notorious for piston slap during cold starting conditions. My 2.7 would clickity click for the first few minutes when I started it up in the cold. the clicking would correspond with engine rpms, when I revved it the click speed would increase. It is supposedly Ok and "all these newer engines do it" is what I found from my research. Something to do with tight piston tolerances and different expansion rates of different metals causing friction and clicking until everything is up to temp.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have the 3.4L engine and I do use sythetec oil (amsoil). I have always noticed a quiet "clicking" sound, but today it was more noticeable.

 

Could be injectors, could be valve clatter, could be anything. Check one thing, the steering shaft seal. If that is gone, or broken alot of engine noises that you arnt used to can come into the cab. I though there was somthing wrong with my truck when my seal broke, took me weeks to figure out that it was the seal. Just check that out before you start tearing the engine apart.

 

Toyotas are noted for valve click,tick,or whatever you want to call it.Its the valves you cant here,that you better be worried about.

 

toyota engines have always had noisy injectors...i think your problem is the valves though

 

a small pebble in one of the tires?? ALWAYS check the easiest/obvious things first.
