Opinions-PleaseHelp me decide 16x7 or 16x8 rims!!
Ok guys, Im gonna put on some 285's- MTR's but I cant decide if I should stick with 16x7 rims or 16x8. Opinions and Pics will help me decide. Thanks guys

Look on tirerack.com for the tires you are going for. At least some of the 285's recommend a 7.5" minimum width rim. I'd go with the 16x8's.
(But I'm running 265's, so apply grain of salt as necessary. -s)

Here's a pretty cool pic that shows how much the 285's are sucked in by the 7" stock wheel. It looks nice and the wheel is more protected than an 8" would be, but I will be going with 16x8 MT Classic II's in a few months or so.
A 7" wheel is within the suggested requirements of a 285 and many of us are running this.

if you want to stay with stock on 285's then there should be any problems.
Some people get 16x8's for their 285's only because they want to keep their stocks just in case they need to swap to stocks.
But if you have the funds, just go w/ some 16x8's. You can't go wrong
Just make sure you get the right rim w/ the right backspacing... hehe but we can all help ya there on this issue!

Either 16x7 or 16x8 will suit fine. If you are using 7" rim, you would probably feel a bit softer ride than 8" rim, but a wider rim will give a better steering control and stable high speed cruising. I remember I read an article about narrow vs. wide rims on 4Wheel Drive & Sport Utility Magazine a few years ago, it said that a narrower rim would need to have the tire rotation more often to maintain the tread wear, and watch the air pressure more closely.
On my rig, I feel more comfortable to use 16x8 wheel for optimal performance for daily driver and four wheeling. 8" wide rim is just in the middle of width range for 285's.

Two of my buddies are managers in the tire biz, and according to them 16X8 wheels are optimal for 285s. The ride improves with the wider wheel.
I'm currently running my factory alloys and things seem fine to me, although when they ride in my truck, evrytime, without fail, they tell me I should go to 16x8s. So that's something to keep in mind.
The perks of the friendship is that I can have my tires rotated often (every 3K miles) and balanced frequently (every 6K).
That is the key with the big tires, keep up with the preventative maintenance.
