HELP...

I installed manual locking hubs... NOW they won't come off... the cone washers are stuck into it and won't let them loose...

What is the trick on getting them out and off... need help ASAP.

 

try soaking them in pb blaster for a couple of days beforehand?

 

Knock on the side of the hub with a hammer. Becareful not to damage it though.

 

well my dumd ass put the cone washers on wrong... the slots need to be pointed out...

 

yeah, hammer works wonders! just watch out, cause some times they'll shoot out. gotta watch where they go if you wanna re-use them.

 

Run the nuts 3/4 of the way off, leave them on, and then tap around the hub body. That keeps the cone washers from becoming flying projectiles, and saves you 1 hour per wheel, keeps you from crawling around the ground looking for them wasting time.

If that doesnt work. Take a small flat blade screw driver or an awl / pointed small punch. Tap into the slots (straight not down), may take a bit and is scary when you first do it because it will feel like you are going to break them. This will cause them to spread and back out.

Well, Im out of the country right now so I cant look at my truck, but if I remember correctly, here is my guess to how it works: after you take the nuts off, screw the puller on where the hub cover was at, then tighten the bolt in the middle (it would push the end of the CV axle), so the hub body would be pushed/pulled out... make sense?

Cebby, isn't a C-clip the only thing holding the CV axle on? Wouldn't that thing just damage the C-clip?

 

All I do is take a 3/4" X 4" OR 5" long round punch and place it on the stud and hit it a few times with a hammer. Works great!

 

It doesn't pull on the axle, the bolt in the center pushes on it with easy, even pressure. It should push just enough to free the cone washers. One of my CV's is on its way out, so I'll try that one first.

 

Yeah, I know it doesn't pull on the C-clip, it pushes on the axle. If I recall correctly, the C-clip is the only thing keeping the axle from sliding in and outof the hub/wheel area. If you push on the axle with no C-clip there, it'll slide in a couple inches. I don't know, maybe the C-clip is strong enough or I'm missing something. Oh well, let us know how it works.

 

Don't know what kind you have but my factory service manual (for the aisin hubs) says to take a hammer and a drift, or punch or some kind of solid bar. Set the punch on the end of the stud just beat on it and the cone washers will work themselves loose and you can then just pull them off with a pair of plyers.

 

When I started screwing with hubs I had a hard time getting them off. I tried the sticking something in the slot but ended up getting them tighter this way. Here's how I do it. Take the nuts off and hit each stud on the end once going clockwise like 12, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Go around 2-3 times. I use a piece of brass rod 3/4 dia x 4 long. Hold the brass on the end of the stud and hit it hard. Then going in the same pattern hit each stud 90 deg from the end (the brass piece going from the tire pointing at the axle). Hit each once and keep going around in the clockwise pattern hitting each once. Hold the brass piece against the threads so the washers don't fly off. I have taken hubs off a couple rusty 86 trucks that had been sitting in junk yards for years without PB Blaster etc. The hubs were off in 5 min each.

I found a brass hammer at Auto Zone. I use that instead of using a regular hammer and brass drift. I spin the nuts back about 1/2 way off the stud and then give it a few quick raps with that brass hammer. The cones always pop right out. Be sure to wear goggles to avoid having a brass chip in your eye. Also put some anti-seize on the cones so they come out easier next time.
