I would say look for chassis saver, made by monstaliner. Its pricey but it would stop it rusting any more.

Hey all, was away from YT for a while but saw that this thread was getting hits so i figured i'd update... I filed a complaint with toyota and haven't made any progress or news from them, local toyota dealer (gale in enfield ct) told me take it off the road, we fixed the drivers side control arm mount by adding a new plate along the upper edge to spread the pressure up the side of the frame rail, we also ground out and re-welded the entire seam. The passenger side is getting done this week , we're cutting out the rusted edge, grinding smooth then replating <===> the plan is to coat the frame with foundation tar?? I dunno tip i got from an old canadian....unfortunatly my frame is rusting from the inside out...so eventually it will catostrophically fail....until then...whatever.

sfayota - I lived in Johnson for the past 5 years during college...haha 5 years! and now i'm moving back to jeffersonville to work at Smuggler's Notch

Daily Drive- I only missed the control arm mount damage..that was hidden udder VT mudd and grime...easily hidden ...i had previous knowledge of the frame rail hole....its rapid growth was startling though. And by VT mudd and grime i mean the solid coat of brown ice that coats the entire undercarriage ALL winter. It litteraly seals moisture and salt into everything it touches.

I have found rust along the rear rocker the length of the door on the rear passenger side (the drivers side has no issue/very clean) Does anyone know if I should get some sheet metal and weld in a custom piece or can I replace that whole rocker panel that reaches the whole length from the rear wheel well to the front wheel well? That rear wheel well has also rusted where the rocker connects and I want a full replacement.

after cutting out the side of the frame rail to remove the rust, I took a shop vac and sucked all the dirt and rust flakes out of the frame, after hours and hours with a flap wheel, I coated the whole frame with POR 15, I laid it on real heavy around any factory holes or access ports to hopefully get it to run inside. I also coated all the new steel too.

Pick up some internal chassis spray, comes with a hose so you can get up inside the frame.

Just had the same exact thing happen to me. And let me tell you, if this breaks away while driving, as it did to me, it's VERY unsafe to drive. The backend with sway and fishtail at the slightest bump/bounce.

Rear lower control arm

Mainly new england folks..we get the salt damage.

My sons "98" just got shipped off to the boneyard. Unfortunately it still ran like a top. The rear arm mount literally ripped loose from the frame rail and the axle drifted back a couple inches. After figuring out what went wrong, we got underneath to see the frame rails were riddled with rust holes of all shapes and sizes. Some as big as my fist! Took it in for a look and was told not to waste another dime on it! Too bad, like I said, it had 220K on it and ran perfect!! What a waste! Good Luck! CG

Either fix your 4Runner!!

If you have a friend with the skills do fix it correct.

If you need to pay it is not going to be cost effective .

Part it out!!

Sell it just like it sits

Toyota Has enough Frame issues with the Newer Trucks !!

Truck is still on the road and running like a top, I know much more now 5 years down the road then I did when this post was started. Yea I missed the rust when I bought it, and I learned my lesson, part of being a teen. The frame has now had multiple rounds of reinforcement and plating, is perfectly strong and just requires a vigilant eye. Truck now has full lift, extended track bar, diff armor, sliders, and tube bumper, all welded and strong as hell. Drives like a champ other than a humming rear end.

Admins can delete this entire thread, there is no information of value here, we all know New England toyotas rust.
