HELP! frame rust issues on 98 4runner.
So got under the truck today to do some maintenance and those little rust holes that needed attention last year have grown over the long winter in vermont. My rear lower control arm mounts are severely rusted and now i'm wondering what to do. If it was a tacoma ..toyota would buy it back..but i havent heard anything about them buying 4runners...has anyone else had any issues like this with thier 4runner frames? Mainly new england folks..we get the salt damage.

From what i hear the 4Runner frames came from Japan the Tacoma frames came from Dana who has since closed the doors .
That does not look all that bad yet and should be easy to repair if you have the tools and know how..To have someone else repair it that could get down right expensive.
That liquid Brine they put on the roads is brutal

If you might have missed that without washing it, I'd say the problem is not Toyota's. Dirt, mud, diy rubber undercoating and paintjobs over rust all just accelerate rusting.

Being in the Salt belt that is quite normal.
You people in Texas driving in the Saltwater ???. Or through brackish creeks
does not faze me the thing is you will be hard pressed to find a replacement frame in any yard .
That is why i pretty much just repair them . After the first couple it becomes easy .
I have two in the garage right now and two outside to strip for parts. Just waiting for the weather to cool down.
If anyone has questions feel free to PM me

Same thing here. In the same exact spot.
File a complaint here @ NHTSA and get a campaign started.
Apparently Toyota is not going to step up and fix the issues unless they have enough complaints and the government feels that there are enough incidents to pose as a safety concern.

Look on the Left hand column and click "File a Complaint"
I've started a thread here to see if Toyota will be forced to do something by the government.

My best recommendation to determine if your frame is actually rusting from the inside out is to probe inside the access holes (both sides) that are found along the frame rail and/or run a compressed air line inside to see if any big chunks of rust come flying out.
My frame looked totally fine until I further examined it. Major scaling on the inside. Outside looks perfect. Well, it seems that the inside rotted so bad that my inner frame rail on the passenger side near the rear track arm had almost rotted through. It is soft like a sponge, but yet the factory Toyota frame paint held it together. Poking it with my finger and it all crumbled revealing quite a few holes.
