Help deciding tires

I posted this in TTORA already but thought I'd post here as well.
Now that my other car has sold, it's time for dump money into the truck. I've determined everything I'm going to buy except for the tires. So I have a couple of questions about them.

1) I don't have the money needed to re-gear my truck so I was going to avoid 33x12.5 and go w/ some 32x11.5. My question is whether its worth it to go w/ 32's from a gearing stand point or just get 33's and deal w/ it untill I get the money to re-gear (which may be a while)?

2) I have done some research and have heard some good things about Cooper Discoverer STT and Firestone Destination M/T. So has anyone had some experienc w/ either of these tires? If you have any other recomendations, feel free to let me know.

Thanks,
Austin

everything ive read on goodyear wrangler mt/r's has made me want those the most. more aggressive looking tread then the revo's with better performance than the ko's. i know i didnt address your ? exactly, but i wanted to let you know of another choice.

i also found out for anyone with a 'sullivan tire' in their area (i think its MA/new england only), next month theyre having a buy 3 get 1 free on goodyears!

their price per tire is $216 (!), but theyre one of the few that stocks it here in MA.

ive used bfg muds mostly. As far as mtr's go not only do like my bfg's better but most people i talk to hate their mtr's. thats just my experience. I have no idea what truck you have but if you have the 4.88's then you can definetly get 33's.

MTR's are defintally a choice, I was just trying to get some more info on those since it seems harder to come by.

As far as my gearing goes, right now its stock I think at 4.10. It's a 96 Tacoma SR5.

it will be slow w/ 265/75's and it will be a dog w/ 4.10's and 285 MT's or MT/R's. the extra diameter and all that weight will kill your power and your gas mileage. if you go to 285's, you'll want to regear soon. if you go w/ 265/75's, then the first time you bottom out offroad, you'll wish you would have gone w/ the 285's.

do it right and get the 285's now and put up with it until you can afford the $900 to regear front and rear...

i vote for MT/R's as well. i'm also supercharged and in the process of regearing to 4.56's...

Cool, thanks for the info.
Since my brother's Runner is out of commision I think I'll throw on the 33 MTR's from that once my truck is lifted. Drive around for a few days and see how it feels.

I'm running 33/12.5-15 Desination MTs on my 96 4Runner with stock 3.90 gears. It's got enough power/torque to get by until you can regear... the biggest issue (at least for me) is that you're going to be fighting to keep it at speed most of the time - that will have a big impact on your gas mileage, especially if you live in the hills/mountains.

If you're set on an MT but can't decided between a 32 and a 33, go with a 33 - the power difference won't be that great. If it was between a 32" AT and a 33" MT, that might be a different story... but if you're talking the same tire/tread, just a different size, go with the 33.

As for the tires - I love them. They showed some wear early, which concerned me a bit, but since then I haven't noticed any additional wear. I've got about 10k miles on mine with minimal wear. They do OK on the road considering they are an MT (I have no complaints), and kick ass off-road. I've never had them hold me back on the trail, and everyone I've wheeled with has been impressed with them. I had them off-road 4 times last summer and haven't had any problems with the sidewalls or the lugs chunking. Only time will tell how they hold up in this reguard, but so far I am very happy with them.

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Check out the April issue of Four Wheeler Magazine. They have a special tire and wheel section and rate the Firestone Destination AT (I realize you specifically asked about the MT) and the Cooper Discoverer STT. They also include a "What Fits, What Hits" and a 15" versus 18" comparison.

(For others interested, they also rate the Interco Super Swamper IROK, Toyo Open Country A/T and Yokohama Geolandar M/T+.)
