Smile Hello. First post: Should I buy this '87 4Runner for $1000/OBO (Lots of Pics)

Greetings to you all. Nice forum you got here. I took a couple hours to familiarize myself with the history of the 4Runner and what was offered in what years and such. I know there are various preferences for solid front axel etc. for offroading and such, but my purpose for owning it is not to restore and/or customize a pride and joy vehicle. I just want a beater with some top-off fun and some hauling capacity to spare my nice cars.

This '87 has 202,000 miles and it has some bad body rust, but the frame looks Ok. It is an base model but it does have a solid bench rear seat (added at port?!?).

Anyway - I'm a total n00b so take a look at these pics and let me know if you think this truck is worth $1000 asking price. I will offer something lower of course, but what should my max price be on something like this.

It will come with an extra (stock I guess) set of wheels/tires.

All depends on how much work you wanna do. I would probably pay about $800 for it, but then again I do all of my own work.

I do all my own mechanical work, but I have little bodywork experience. But I have no desire to restore the body. I'll probably just quickly grind off the surface rust and treat it with some preventer and prime/paint just to stop it from spreading. If it will pass inspection and run for me for a while I would be happy at an $800 sale price. I was thinking about going in a little lower and letting him negotiate me to $800.

Sounds like a good deal to me. If it has a 22r/re engine in it then even better. Reliability and ease of work!

Well it isn't a turbo and it is an '87 so that means it is the 22RE for sure, right?

Well besides being a 22re it could be a V6 which in my opinion aren't worth a fart! But I don't see any of the V6 badging on the front which normally indicates V6. But it seems like a good deal to me.

I just got an 86 with 150k+ miles for $200. The exterior is much nicer than that, but the interior needs a lot of work. That is a nice truck...probably worth closer to $800 like 93 Runner just said.

No, the V6 wasnt offered untill 1988.

You don't understand. I MUST resist the urge to mod this truck. It is a beater and nothing more. I am not going to work on it until it is nice.....MUST....RESIST.....

I better not hang around here. I have too many other hobbies!

Thats what I said, when I used to only use the truck for my daily driver and had the ss camaro in the garage for my pure fun toy, but as you can see in the sig. The mod bug has bitten and I have a garage full of junk.

What's the attraction to the mirrors? Remember I'm a total 4Runner n00b. Were they better in '87 for some reason?

Well, I drove it and bought it tonight. Final sale price: $750 including a full set of extra wheels with good tires that will pass inspection. It ran great, shifted well, clutch felt fine (rebuilt master cylinder), started on first flick of the key, idled well, brakes had small pulsation but worked linearly and felt solid, brand new exhaust from including header, no leaks, no overheating, no real problems.

A couple little things will need to be dealt with in addition to the rust: horn doesn't work (fuse?), right front running light out (bulb?), small dime sized chip in windshield (safelite repair service?).

I'm happy. Now I think I will leave here before I am tempted to start modding!!
