Header Opinion. Just got cat-back

Header Opinion. Just got cat-back

My Doug Thorley, Jardine cat back just arrived for my 2000 4runner. Looks great! I now want a header before installing the cat back. I had the header/catback from NorthWest Offroad on my 3.0 pickup. Since NorthWest does not make a header, I am looking at others. I like the looks and cost of the Downey for the 3.4.

I have searched and only found one who mentioned anything about using the Downey header. Are any of you using one with their Y pipe and what do you think of it?

What would you do? Would you just use the cat back or use a header with it?

Here is a photo of the exhaust. The muffler is so small in comparison to the factory one.

No I only have one. Same as the 99. My 4Runner was produced Oct 99 so the Downey Y pipe will work.

I got mine from AutoAnything.com. They were the cheapest with free shipping. Summit Racing has them as well with free shipping but they have some sort of handling charge and are $20 more. They were around $250.

That's not a bad price, but that system looks like 2.25" to me. 2.5" would be ideal. That's why I am holding off. I am going to build my own system. Regardless, that looks pretty nice for the price.

As for headers, I would never put them on again. Too much hassle and too much noise (you lose some of the "muffling" characteristics of the thick cast iron manifolds). My 4Runner just doesn't sound healthy - although I raced a 2006 SS Tahoe from a 50MPH roll yesterday and he couldn't get around me. That was pretty entertaining. My 3rd gear rocks.

I couldn't believe it.

I really liked my 3.0 header. Didn't have many problems with that kit. Still undecided. I am going to install this over the weekend and decide after then on the header. Doug Thorley offers a lifetime on their exhaust. I am sure it is void if I cut it up to work with Downey's header.

^ great, but the description sounds funny when it says the "tailpipe" and "H-pipe" diameter are 2.5". I might have to find out for certain. That really is a great price if it is 2.5" - even though building my own would be fun...

Can you confirm?

I will put a tape measure on it and measure. Will post photo.

It is a 2.5". This was taken from the end of the pipe at the tip.

OK, I think I get it. The O.D. is 2.5 but the I.D. is 2.25...

Here's what summit lists it as:

That is odd. Here is the link from Doug Thorley's site. They list them as a 2.5"

I think it would be fun to make your own. I may make my own Y pipe when I buy a header. I don't like the Downey's goes under the transmission. To me that is too low. My current muffler has drug and bent up. I could only imagine the cross over as one of the lowest points.

Did you install this cat-back yet? What are your thoughts/impressions of it?

BTW, there is one other thing I don't understand. If this is a 2.5" exhaust, how does it bolt up properly to the 2.25" cat?

I have that system...and LOVE IT! At first I thought it was too loud, but it's really grown on me. When I drive my sisters 01, it just sounds boring.

I live in LA. After I installed my Downey headers on my 99 Supercharged 4Runner, my gas mileage went to ÅÅÅÅ. It performs great but hate the gas issue. I get only 180 on a full tank driving locally before the light comes on. I remember getting 230+ prior to the headers. Unless there's something wrong with my 4Runner, you might have the same mileage problem.

Also, Downey states that the U Clamps provided will seal the headers to the Y Pipe without any leaks. However, mine leaked at every connection. I had to get mine welded to seal it off completely.

I have the DT headers and the Jardine CAT back. I love them. Just call nick at Doug Thorley (800) 347-8664 and he will hook you up with a good price. DT used to make TRDs headers for the 3.0, now TRD dosen't sell them anymore so DT just put their name on them.

Thanks for the info on DT headers. I thought they made headers for the 3.4 too.

I love my new exhaust. It all fit really well and sounds great! It bolted right up to the Cat. The only thing I don't like is it exits out the corner. I am going to bend that all up off road. I am thinking of bending the end part so that it is more in the stock location.
