LOL... I've never been in devastatingly slow traffic where I've had to do that but I can see it working well... we were wheelin and sometimes between big trails there might have been some slow windy turns and 20 mins into it my clutch foot was on strike braking waiting for others to do the climb or whatever so I just popped it into 4lo and I kid you not, I probably touched the clutch three times in the rest of the trip, like four hours.

No, the tach reads RPM's from the engine, not anywhere else.

Yeah... the brother sound of trying to put the 5 speed in gear without pressing the clutch and the cousin sound of someone stupid accidently shifting from 2nd to 1st instead of to 3rd (miscalculated where 3rd was)...
my ex girlfriend gave me the pleasure of listening to all of these sounds, boy I miss her.

haha, you need to visit Houston around where my house is then. It's like a funeral precession in New Orleans everyday between 6am-9am and 3pm-6pm.

ahhhh good - there was some post - I think in this thread and someone remarked that if the tach is reading 3000 in 4LO then the engine is really firing at 12000 RPM or something!

I was like holy cra* my engine is toast!

well thats good news

Try Boston - I've sat in bumper to bumper traffic at 2am before

Ive topped out the taco at about 50 at 5,000 rpm in 4lo, probably not the best thing to do for the tranny, at that engine rpm the output of the transmission was probably spinning 6000rpm

I use 4Low all the time on the steeper logging roads around here. You can't go very fast and would be in 1st gear most of the time in 4high. By using 4 low you can use 1,2, and 3rd gear instead of just 1st. That way you can keep you RPM's (5spd) at around 2000-3000rpms. That way you've torque available any time.
Just a heads up for the less experienced people: you've to go really slow to go to 4lo as stated before, but you can shift from 4lo to 4hi at any time. Obviously use your clutch and go down a couple of gears. I do this all the time when I find myself in 4lo, 5th gear and can't go any faster. Then I just go to 4hi and into 3rd.

you can only do this if you have a Tacoma or 3rd gen runner, maybe a 3rd gen truck, but not entirely sure, these t-cases have a syncro for shifting from 4lo to 4hi, the older t-cases don't and will grind very badly if you shift them like that

I used to this with my '91 all the time, never was a problem. It went very smooth. I am pretty sure the 3.0 and 3.4 both have chain driven transfer cases. Maybe they both allowed for it. My first '91 was a 22re, but I can't remember if I did it with that one. I am sure I did it with the 3.0. They were all 5spd.

I try 2 first, if I'm still stuck then I try 4-hi, if I'm still stuck I go to 4-lo, if I'm still stuck then I try 4-lo with rear locker, if I'm still stuck I push the "CB LOCKER" button and yell for help.

4-l

I use 4 low a lot, with my hubs locked and unlocked for pulling and towing and for wheeling almost 99% of the time. My truck is an auto so to crawl in 4H I have to give it to much gas to go that slow which in my opinion cant be good for the trans, it would be like sitting on a steep hill in traffic and in stead of using your brakes to hold you back you held the engine at 1500 rpms in gear and let the trans slip to hold you back, not good but in 4L I can basically idle along in 2nd and have plenty of power on tap for climbing and crawling through deep streams and stream beds. I use 4L around the house all the time like when I’m hauling brush to be burned or fire wood. I actually used my truck in 4L to pull a concrete block garage down a few months back! I had to remove the garage to make room for my new 2 door 3 car garage that is in the works! We removed the tin roofing and un bolted all the bolts that were holding the wood frame of the roof to the block structure, I got the brilliant idea to hook the tow strap around the top of the roof and pull it off. My plan was to be able to take it apart on the ground instead of off of a ladder; well I was wrong the entire building pulled over! I’m just glad no one got hurt! I also used my truck to remove the poured concrete stairs that led up to my porch when we rebuilt it, that was fun

I try:

2H then 2 L then 4H then 4L then 4LL with the lockers in there somewhere....

It's a must have for trail riding. Also works good for crawling up stuff for flex pics!

I just used 4-Lo on an old gravel road down the street. I popped it in there just to make sure it was working correctly...

It was.
