4-Lo is the shift setting on the transfer case.
Its geared lower not for speed but, torque.

I hope this helps.

4lo rocks - w/ a 5spd it is stupid to use anything else when off road..... 1st and 2nd in 4lo will climb just about anything.....1st in 4lo is awesome you can crawl along at 2-5mph - my friends landrover got stuck in a mudpit this past weekend - he got out pretty quickly - but the tacoma comes through creeping at 5 mph in 1st gear 4 low no problem!!!yeeehhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Oh, and the 3.0 often bogs down going up steep hills, so I have to roll back down and pop it in 4lo and crawl back up.

Weak engines rule!

I had to use 4-Lo when I was stuck in about 4-5 feet of snow, lets just say, the snow was over my hood and up to my mirrors when I attempted to go right throught but ended up getting stuck. The 4Runner had no problems getting out of the snow in 4-Lo.

Whats the deal with going into neutral before shifting into 4low? I have a 5spd and I could swear that I have shifted into 4low while in gear but with the clutch in.....is it possible just to switch into 4low with just the clutch in while in gear or am I just imagining things?

I've done it in gear with the clutch in, so you're not imagining things. Just dont try to do it while you are still rolling. U will hear an ugly sound.

yes, well, fortunately there are forums (like YT) that exist who don't laugh at people for not knowing. Unfortunately, there are forums that exist that don't have the maturity level we have here and they aren't there to actually help people but rather make fun of them.

The only time I could see using it in snow, is if you are either off-road or in really really deep snow. Top speed of 4L is like 20 mph.
Really? I have gone 35 in 4lo sometimes. Since 4lo is 2.276, it is probably the same as 80 mph in high range as far as RPM's go.

yeah -whats the deal with the revs - someone said if your tach reads 3,000 RPM in low it really is double that or something? Did I understand that correctly? Are you supposed to double the revs on the tach every time you are in 4LO?
