Have you ever used 4lo
I've never used 4lo and I was wondering what conditions I would ever need it in, I've been in more than a foot of snow and never had a problem in 4Hi
The closest I've come is putting the auto into 1st gear coming down a steep hill but I still had it in 4hi
I know their must be owners out their using 4lo so who is it and what for

I have once or twice, mostly when confronted by large rocks and similar.
You can go 80 in 4wheel high so that your rear end won't slip out, but I personally go a max of 25 or so. If you can go faster than that, I personally think that you don't need 4wd.
It also depends on what transfer case you have. If you have full time, you can use 4wd all the time any time.

I use 4 lo a lot when wheeling because I like to take things slow (less breakage) and with a manual tranny it just makes it easier because you don't have to play with the clutch so much.

I have only used 4L when I am off-road and climbing rocks.
The only time I could see using it in snow, is if you are either off-road or in really really deep snow. Top speed of 4L is like 20 mph.

think "tractor" when you have it in 4 Lo.
I used it last fall out at the cottage to back up a hill closer to the cottage and snag onto an old 250 gallon fuel oil tank. Then dragged it out to the road so we could get it hauled away. 4 Lo provides power at a slow speed so that you don't have to give it the gas and go faster than you might want to in tight confines. My 2cents worth.

4-LOW
Pulling my boat out of the H2O during low-low tide on a slick ramp. Pulling someone that is stuck out of the mud and if you're stuck and need instant torque. Usually going through mud or snow with some speed, 4-h does the trick. Like the rock-crawlers said, when they are manuvering over a trails slowly. "Like a tractor" was a good analogy.

I just used it for the first time on my rig today, pulling some of my buddies out of ditches because we got a snow storm last night but the retards around here didn't cancel our school district!! I was outside in the freezing cold pulling people out for 2 hours...I am now truly amazed with my 4Runner, it didn't spin out or get stuck at all...and I was in some pretty tight spots there for awhile. Luckily I had both my tow strap and chain on hand today!
Like everybody else on here has said, 4Lo is used when you need instant power with just barely giving it gas. It is GREAT for pulling people out of ditches or just trying to get the car free from the very strong grip of ice on the roads!

I used it once when I got stuck on some snow when I had my 2nd gen, it was so embarassing, I was on my way up to my driveway. :pat: Thats what I get for showing off my 4WD in front of my neighbours.

This is crazy, I would have expected something more like "Whebn don't you use 4lo?"! I use it all the time but I also hit some tough stuff lately. Most of you guys must have autos 'cause if you ever tried crawling a loaded up 4Runner over tough terrain you really wish you had a third leg (Stop thinking about that
)
. Anyway for the 5 speeders like myself, 4lo third is almost the same as hi range stock so if you are in third, shift into high. Also, my vehicle place card says for 4hi, 55mph max. I agree with flagstyne, what the hell do you need 4wd for going more than 25? Anyway, when you are hill-climbing, decending sttep slopes, rock crawling, pulling stuff, muddin, slowin it down or in other words having fun, 4lo is your friend. BTW, Fourwheeler dosen't test vehicles without 4lo in the 4x4 of the year test. 4lo is a true trademark of off road oriented 4x4. I'll shutup now.

I use it anytime I am offroading under about 30 mph, which is most of the time. I like having a slower speed to drive at because it is easier on the truck when the going gets rough.
I have used it on pavement when backing up a steep ramp at the furniture store. I have manual hubs, so I don't know if that is a good idea with ADD 4wd systems.

I never go above 55 in 4wheel hi, i drove around all day saturday during the northeastern snow storm in 4hi, the only time i use 4low is when im climbing a steep hill or pulling a jeep out...that happens a lot, not all jeep owners understand the jeep thing yet.

not to high jack the thread but don't ya hate it when everyone beats ya to the ideal answer!!!
serves me right now not checking the forum out every hour!!! hehe...
if you ever get stuck... then you know 4lo was required... but you'll figure it out quickly when 4lo should be used. rarely is it used outside of towing or tugging someone out that's stuck or on extreme hills and rocky terrain.
try it out on some real soft surface just so you can get a feel for the raw torque!
