Haul'n Gass in Mexico

I'm planning on driving down the Baja to Mulege next fall. I was woundering what everyone's experience getting gasoline in Mexico was like. Is it poor quality?, Is there a prefered brand? Also, I'd consider bringing one or two 5 gal tanks (from the US) just in case. Since the roads I heard can be rough, what is the best way to transport these? Outside on the rack, or inside the camper shell (vented of course)? Any thoughts appreciated.

Cool Pemex or Bust...

There is One Brand in Mexico... PEMEX... It is owned and ran by the Foxes..
ie.. El Presidente Vinciente Fox...
Supposedly the gas is all the same.. supposedly..
There are two grades though, magna / premio (green/red) (cheaper/more)
(87/92) the red might be better quality, but is expensive.. I never used it myself and had no problems after 5k+ driving south of the border..
but hey when in Rome;..
I would suggest a locking gas cap for sure.. maybe even lock those jerry cans down too...
I have heard distant rumors of some fuel pumps going raw from the lower quality but I'm sure yotas can handle it because we use the same pump as the rest of the world..
A spare pump and filter would be a definite plus!
The pumps are not self serve, the average tip is 3-5 pesos (25c)
Oh, and watch the pump man EVERY time.. make sure he zeros the pump before and doesnt do anything funky..
The term is "yena low (llena lo)" to fill your tank..
Just preventatives Mexico is a very friendly place, most of the time it's definately crazier the closer to the border though..

BuenViaje!!!
