Group buy?: True HID lamp conversion

I got a lead on getting true HID projectors in the 4Runner headlight housings. The guy here transplants your choice of HID projectors (from donor BMW 3s, Audi A4, HondaS2000) and grafts it into the stock headlights.

Here's the site
http://www.illusion-lighting.com/

Some of this is pretty spendy, but you do get a full HID system (not just bulbs), projectors and the ballasts.

Just thought I'd throw this out-- anyone interested?

the catch

Yes, you do have to send them your headlight housing. you could also send them a 2nd set, and keep your truck drivable during the time of the install.

That's cool. I'd go with the S2000 projectors. They are really nice/bright and have good color.

I think Audi or BMW projectors would be optimal. The BMW ones have a really nice cutoff line and the 5 series ones give you that purplish hue from angles. So do Audi ones. I believe the new 3-series bimmers have the bi-xenon projectors as well.

Interesting!

I'm interested! My dad's '99 BMW 540i has pojector headligts. They light up the immediate road, but don't hurt the eyes of oncoming traffic. Also there's the cool factor of the projector lense. Reflector housings and true H.I.D. is still nice, but projectors work better and won't bother oncoming traffic. I get people to flash their brights at me often when I'm driving at night. Then I do mine and they get really mad... or maybe jealous. =)

Snappy - spoke to these guys a while back regarding the projectors. They were all for it, but needed someone in the California area with a 4runner to do the initial modification as they needed the vehicle at their business to test fit and adjust the projectors. After that I would guess they could do the others by sending in your headlamps. Any takers for the initial test-fit?

Guinea Pig

RunnerSS --

If we get a group buy together, I'll volunteer to be the piggy.
They can have my headlights for as long as they want - I'll just drive my g/f's civic.

I was going to send them all an all new headlight assembly for the install, but they told me that for the first one (they have never put projectors in a 4Runner before), they would actually have to have the whole vehicle at the shop to measure for fit and adjustment of the units. After that, everybody else can send in individual headlamp units. Dropping my east coast 4Runner off on the west coast is kinda tough............... Still want the projectors though...!!!

Hi guys/girls,

This is Johnny from Illusion-Lighting. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up. Since we've never built a retrofit for a Toyota 4runner, we would most likely need to physically have the truck with us, at least for the prototype unit. The reason we need the truck is to do the physical alignment. Once these projectors are mounted its rather permanent, making alterations later on difficult and messy.

A second option that wouldn't require us to physically have the vehicle would be for us to just guess. There won't be physically anything wrong with the headlamps if we just guess, but the projector might be mounted off. From the pictures that we've recieved, it seems that when you adjust the vertical and horizontal alignment for the 4Runners, the entire headlamp moves instead of just the internals. The result is that if we mount the projector aimed to high, you'll have to compensate by lowering how your headlamp is aimed and then you'r headlamps will be sticking out on the top instead of being flushed with your hood. Now if I'm interpreting the pictures wrong where only the internals moved, then we wouldn't physically need the truck and guessing wouldn't matter as only the internals of the headlamp are moving. Anyways hope this has been helpful.

As for the group buy, we're more than capable of accomondating a group buy, we just want to have that first prototype out of the way before we do anything else. One last thing, for this retrofit to work, your headlamp lens must be clear.
