GPS traking in 4runner

thee has been on average 1 highly modified toyota truck or 4runner stolen in california each week. i am very scared, my 4runner is stock now but i plan to be putting high $$$ into it, i have a few anti starting devices, and a camera outside on the runner. i was thinging if there is a GPS thing that will show where my 4runner is at all times. i know phones have traking devices on them, do they still have the traking devices if there is no service hooked up? if they do i want to make a way that the ohone is hooked up to the battery and is always charging and make a built broof box and weld it to the frame or something, this way if someone steals it i can call the cell phone company and find the location of the truck...will this work? if not what wil!?!??!

From what I understand alot of newer cell phones can be traced to exact location. Simply because of 911 and emergency. My guess is that if you plan to do something like this, it may not be the most convient thing in the world as you would have to open up the box to get your cell phone eveytime you want to use it.

IMO you could maybe put in a fuel kill switch. Place it somewhere that only you know where it is and then just kill fuel to to the truck every night. Pretty effective really. Just some food for thought.

hmm, no I wouldn't imagine so. As you would have to be subscribed to a service for that to work.

Satellite communications are one way, and will be for a long time. Cell phones triangulate using towers. Drive it outside the cell coverage area and it's not traceable. There is LoJack. Drive that out where there are no cops around, and they won't find it either. Anything reasonable that you'll be able to do is: transmitter with a limited range in the vehicle and someone honing in on that signal.

I recall a recent news report on one of those evening news shows that discussed a type of device that employers and parents are starting to use to track their employees in company vehicles and parents to monitor their children in real time via the Internet.

Go buy a LoJack. Cost $595 + tax

Worth it in my opinion.

Buy a Grant security removeable steering wheel kit like I did. No steering wheel, hard to drive off/steal. $160 for the whole kit and kaboodle from Summitracing.

Just what socal said... When you call it in, they activate a device that tracks the vehicle until recovered. and if they don't get it back in 24 hrs, money back.

1. Go to Grant's website.
2. Pick out the steering wheel you like.
3. Somewhere you type in your rig for the type of install kit.
4. You also need the security kit.

Three things: steering wheel, install kit, security kit

Buy it from Summitracing...much cheaper than the high prices you see on Grant's site.

Here is what I got...

Steering Wheel Part# GRT-414 $40
Installation Kit Part# GRT-3593 $115
Security Kit Part# GRT-2001 $16

Well worth the money and a pretty easy install. Hit me up via email/PM if you get it and I'll give you some pointers on the install as the instructions are confusing and suck, until you've done it once.

Good luck.

The one thing I've put on my land cruiser is the "club" for the clutch pedal, which I think is alot harder to get off compared to the standard steering wheel club. I'll be putting a removable steering wheel like Brian said next. Its all a matter of time- the longer/harder they have to work, the less likely they are to drive off in your vehicle. Doesn't mean they won't trash the interior though...
