So the 130amp highlander one was $220 plus $60 core, which you get back once you pull yours off, right? Also, when do alts tend to die on these trucks?

I did not read the entire thread, so if this has already been posted, I apologize. The CS130 and CS144 alternators dont need much to work, just a battery connection and charge light wire. Everything else is internal. Alternator plugs are available from most auto parts stores for it, so it would be easy to connect.

Here is a GM diagram from a 1996 Chevy Silverado, that used either a CS130 or CS144 depending on options. The wiring is the same for both.

Are the GM alts that you noted above direct bolt-ons?

They are the same alternators mentioned earlier (page1) of the thread.

A teaser pic...

Sorry for the delay... I snapped a bunch of pics but photobucket and webshots won't take the ones I just snapped. I was however able to find an a pic comparing my OE alt and the GM one I put in. I think this thread is a bit funny at this point, wish I could have had my stuff posted earlier. I'll get the mounting bracket pics up when either service works for me again. THIS IS A DIRECT BOLT ON. I did it. It took me 20 minutes. You can sit and talk back and forth all day wondering, or tell me it doesn't work, but I think the fact that you've seen the pics of mine in should tell you something. Garret questioined the CS144's that Crappled had posted.... they weren't the same. My invoice says a CS144, and my mounting holes are directly across from each other like the factory alternator. That would mean I'm using a CS144 casing that originally put out 140 amps that I had built up to 200 amps. Enough talk... Oh wait, I need to make this official...

Parts list...
CS144 alternator as shown below, with modified plug
4 washers of whatever size it takes fit over stock upper mounting bolt

That's it. I'd call it a direct replacement myself... until my other pics work, this is all you get....

If you expect to walk into a parts store and buy an alt, and walk home and put it in it won't work. I said that back on page 1. Notice that extended harness on there? That's so you can just plug and go. Somebody was talking about soldering and butt connectors and some other garbage, just have a shop put the right plug on... it might cost $20 if you have the alt already.

Happy Thanksgiving, I'm off to do a little bit of this...

ORIGINALY POSTED BY Ganoid!!!
ORIGINALY POSTED BY Ganoid!!!

I had the 100 amp mobi-arc alternator upgrade and it lasted about a year. It never really had much usable output at idle either. My latest attempt at cheap power is a GM CS144 out of a 97 Caddy Eldorado rated at 140 amps (over 100 of which are available at idle). The only modification I made to the alternator was to remove the screw's on the case and rotate the back 180* for better access to the wires. This thing is a beast compared to the Toyota or even the modified Toyota alternators. I have had no problems keeping up with my warn 9k winch running only 1 red top optima. Total cost with no core was only like $130 at auto-zone with a lifetime warranty.

It fits with very little modifications and a 2" longer belt.

I know it a little late but this should clear up any doubt with the 2 CS-144 models

that didn't really seem to clarify anything. Just a video showing how to rebulid and take apart an alternator. Didn't clarify if it will fit or not which seemed to be the basis for the discussion.
