Gen II Dash Pot questions?

My 3.0 has that dash pot "thing" mounted forward of the intake and the cap cracked and fell off. Now I have the filter and separator that will not go in. What does this do? Can I rig something up to put it in there? Does it really matter? Someone send me a lifeline if you would. I am growing increasingly frustrated with this truck. I also have coolant temp sensor troubles or wiring, not sure which. Anyway, my engine idles high as hell when it's cold and my gas mileage has gone stright down the tubes. I am trying to figure out which of these problems may be being caused by the dash pot or the ECT. With my ECT the needle on the dash bounces from normal to 0 from time to time. Does this input come from the ECT sensor on the intake manifold or does it come from somewhere else. I don't want to change the wrong part or put more money into a part that I can live without. Thanks for the help

Hey, don't know to much about it. You're talking about the round thing next to the TB right? The cap feel off of mine and the folks at the dealership said not to worry about it. Of course, that's the dealership talking so take it for what you will. sorry I couldn't be much help

The dashpot controls the burn of exhaust gasses left over when you let off the gas pedal. Basically it slows down the return of the throttle to its idle position. Mine was broken like yours and I just got a new one at the dealer. It's likely that it has nothing to do with your mileage issue. The dashpot could be responsible for the idling problem, but that would only be the case if the 'thing that pushes in' is stuck out (i.e.. it won't depress like it's supposed to). I hope this helps. I think they're like $60 from the dealer to replace.
