Gauge and dash backlighting
#442
update: there is something up with my bulbs, they flash out and i have to slap the dashboard to get them to flicker on and some times they won't even flicker back on. if i pull them out, fiddle with the 2 steel prongs and fiddle them back in the dash they work. I'm not too sure what is going on or the problem.. cos the bulbs still produce light... i might switch back to stock now

Okay, I just ordered my LED's to mod my 1997 interior lighting. But I have a question; I know that there are three #194's bulbs that I will need to replace within the gauge cluster. But where exactly are they? Picture would be great!! Thanks!! Also, on 1996-1997 4runner's we only have one bulb for the A/C controls, Is this bulb a #74 as well?

FYI: Just came from a couple bone yards and all the 4runners have been picked through for radios, clocks, and bulbs from behind the climate control. I was in search of the green condoms because mine was stuck to the burnt out bulb and tore when I tried to remove it (I soaked it in soapy water first but that didn't work). But I did score a bunch from 1st gen RAV4s. They use the same style HVAC control as Ned (reply #268 in this thread).

Ok, so I'm a newbie to this all. Started converting all of my A/C unit lights as well as my shifter light, ashtray and lighter light. My next step is the speedo gages. I have no idea where to start when it comes to removing it. Can anyone point me in the right direction to where i should start in this process? Thanks

What type of #74 LED's are used in the gauge cluster?
Sorry to keep bringing up a VERY old thread but what type of #74 bulbs did you guys use. On superbrightleds.com they had a bunch of different types and i dont want to load up on a bunch if they aren't the correct sizing.

To all who do this, order 2-3 spares for each bulb you plan on replacing, I had to pull out my dash and take out all the blue ones because eventually, they kept flickering and then just stopped working for no reason. I'm not sure why. I had to go back to stock! So sad. Well now my HVAC and cig lighter and gear shift indicators are the only ones with cool lights in them.

Do NOT order from superbrightleds.com. Some of their items don't fit, but those that fit will burn very quickly. Regardless where you set dimming to full or 3/4 as they recommend, not a single bulb from them lasted more than 2 months. And trust me, taking your dashboard apart every two months sucks!

"Cooker 30" If your truck is a 1996-1997, then this bulbs will work for you. The link bellow is about my lighting upgrade on my truck. Hope it will help!!

Update: Well since almost all my new led bulbs burnt out except the one in my gear shifter and the key ring, i had to go back to stock bulbs, but recently I found a seller on ebay that sells the ones I wanted
He actually sent me the wrong ones which i posted below, but I msg'd him and he is sending the correct ones free of charge and I get to keep these weird ones that also worked but did not produce that hyper blue color that my old ones did
So for about $3.40 cdn and free shipping. It only took 2 weeks to arrive from China, and yes i know how sketchy ppl feel about ordering from them. once my new ones arrive, i will test them. and give u the ebay sellers name. great to deal with, i cant believe hes sending me the right ones without asking me to return the wrong ones.
If anyone knows where I can buy cheap tri-led's #74 bulbs for the HVAC, please post. preferably not vleds or autoilumination.

Well, the A/C control and Rear defroster use those neo-wedge bulbs like Fo_Sheezy mentioned... they are pretty easy to replace.
As for the bulb total, My 98 4Runner (I don't know exactly what changed for each year) uses:
-3 #194 for the gauges
-2 #74 for the climate control
-1 #74 for the shifter
-1 #74 for the ignition key ring
-1 #74 for the ash tray
-1 Neo-wedge for the A/C
-2 Neo-wedge for the rear defroster
On the rear defroster you can change the bulb for both the backlighting and the "on" light, A/C is just the backlighting.
You can also change out the indicator lights in the dash, such as 4x4, ECT PWR, Cruise, turn signals, etc. by replacing them with #74.

Another company to order from.
Hey guys, I bought my headlight bulbs from Recon Truck Accessories (gorecon.com) They also sell all kinds of light related products including LED bulbs. Kind of pricey but I am satisfied with their products so far and I will be using their LEDs to replace everything on my 1993 regular cab 4wd.

mine have lasted over a year and still going strong
