Question Gas Mileage

Just ran through my first tank of gas in my new 4Runner. All city driving and averaged 19.7 mpg. I was surprised with this figure having gotten rid of a 98 Blazer that was averaging 14mpg city. I was wondering what kind of mileage others are getting?

It had 31K on it when I purchased it and was thinking about new plugs & wires, but now I may just leave it for awhile longer.

I get around 17-18 city driving and 20-21 highway, if I keep it under 80. Faster than that and the mileage drops alot. My average combined driving tank is usually 20 mpg.

I tried to be easy with the throttle keeping the rpm's below 2200. I was surprised with the acceleration doing it that way, it still got up to 60 pretty quick.

Yep, thats the real trick, isn't it, keeping your foot out of it?

I've been a little heavy footed on this tank, because I had anew exhaust put on last week, so I've really been "testing" it out!

I think mine is around 18mpg in the city and I really can't say as far as those long road trips.

I can go 350 miles on a tank of gas. An
average of 19 miles per gal.

Bob K:

You're doing pretty well. The best I've gotten was around 21 mpg on a straight highway drive from LA to SF. The worst was about 15 when I was hauling food samples in stop and go traffic in LA all day.

While you didn't ask this, I am guessing your next question might be: How can I increase my mileage? There are two things you can do right off the bat:

1) Increase your tire pressure
2) Buy a free-flow muffler

I've done both on my former 99 with good success. I found that #1 will give you about ~0.5 more mpg per gallon but at the expense of ride comfort and faster tire wear (not significant but enough to notice). #2 increased my overall mileage by 1mpg easy. Search the board for "muffler" and you'll have more debate and reading than you can shake a stick at!

I guess I got about 280-300 before the SC, and this was my first tank with boost...and actually got 260 miles getting on it a bit Hey, I just got it!!! I expect at least what I got before considering how much I was in the gas on this tank.

..and do the 2wd's have bigger tanks? Because, I know I can only get about 14.xx gallons in the tank when I fill up, if its as low as I run it....at 350 miles, thats about 24mpg, not 19??? This caught my eye, because I know when I get around 300, that I am right at 20mpg.

With my '91 I usually averaged about 12-14mpg driving around town, and I don't do enough freeway driving to test the freeway mpg

With my new Xterra I haven't had a chance to get a good measurement, but on my first tank of gas, I had gone a little over 140 miles before I filled up, and the tank was a little over half full, so I'm guessing that I could go maybe 300 miles on a tank (hehe you also have to figure in that my 4Runner has a 14 or 15 gallon tank, and my new '02 Xterra has a 19.5 gallon tank ) So i'm guessing that around town I'm going to get about 16-18 mpg So i'm not complaining, it's the best gas mileage i've gotten on any truck i've had

That's 18.5 galolons on a full tank at
@19 miles per gal is roughly 351 miles
per tank going from Englewood to Orlando on the suicide highway.

I get between 17 and 19 mpg with the supercharger. It was hard to believe my mileage after installing it. I am plenty happy with the mileage concidering the horsepower it makes.

4 banger + 5 spd + light taco with 18 gal tank = 350+ miles/tank. about 19.5 mpg. adverage. mostly city but some highway driving. probably 21-22 mpg on the highway, 17-18 in city.

these are all better than my friends '86 2wd f-150. I-6, about 8-10 MPG. 4 spd tranny. damn fords, junk...
