gas gauge

hey guys whats up. 99 4runner 4wd, stick, 3.4L. my gas gauge is stuck and it wont pass 1/2 tank. I am having to go on my odometer based on mpg, and its a total pain and had closed calls to running out of gas. The toyota stealership wanted 720.00 to fix it. Do you guys know if it is really hard to fix it, and if it is this expensive? thanks a lot.

Search for and read about TSB EL010. That MAY explain your problem.

Mine wouldn't read below a quarter of a tank, hence we ran out of gas after buying it. Found the problem to be a bad ground to the sending unit. An easy fix, without removing the tank. You can access the sending unit thru the access hole below the rear left seat. Might give it a try if nothing else works.

where do you attach the new ground to (one external and one to ?the original ground wire? do you have to open up the unit? or is the sending unit external of the tank? any pics?
