garage height..and baskets
well, looks like I am going to lift my rig. and I also want a basket on the top. The problem is, I have a bout 11 inches of clearance to play with. Right now my rig sits at 5ft 9 in and the opening to the garage is 6 ft 8 in. I want about 2-3 in of suspention lift, and 32/33s on there. and most of the baskets are what..about 6 in? Do any of you who have a basket park in your garage? any of you not fit after everything was done? on paper it looks like a lot of room but when pulling in it looks like there would be no way even with just the basket on it (no lift). Those with baskets, do you take it off before you go into the garage? only put it on when you are going to use it?

I have a 97 4runner, 3 inches lift and 285's. i also have a basket and lights on top. when i pull in the garage at home, i have about 1-2 inches of room above me, yeah its real tight. I dont worry though cause i do fit. the only pain comes from if i go places and the only parking is a parking garage, those i cant fit into, well most i cant.

A lot of it will depend on what basket you go with, and how you mount it. For baskets... if I remember correctly, Wilderness makes a 4" tall safari basket - that is the shortest one I've seen. I've got a Surco (as do several others on the board) that is 5" tall. For mounting it, you can mount it to the factory roof rack, if you have one, or to an aftermarket rack like Thule or Yakima. Using the factory rack will let the basket sit lower, but it won't be as strong. Going with aftermarket will let you carry more weight, but will raise the basket up some.

My '99 4Runner with 4" of coil lift, 295/75R16 tires and a Con-Ferr basket just barely fit in my garage. I have since swapped ou the rear suspension to leaf, and now I had to remove the basket and put P225 tires on the rear to get it out of the garage.:pat:

Roof Rack
Most roof racks you can figure on at least 5" of height, but then if you mount some lights to the rack they are going to stick up higher than the rack. I have an OME suspension lift, 2" RB body lift with a THULE system on top and I have maybe 1.5" clearance. So it is either get just a basket (take-off the THULE stuff) and then some lights and park in the garage, or get the basket anyway and park outside and kill the neighbor's cats immediately.
Plus, my driveway is not level so I must get in the garage to work on the rig and that ain't going to happen with a basket and the THULE stuff. I do imagine that eventually I will do the former above as I am not a fan of having to leave earlier just to warm up the car and/or scrape the frost off the windows. I love my garage! It just needs to be about a foot taller at the door! Hmmmmmmmm...chain saw, a couple 2x4s, some vinyl siding, now that would be a mod!

but, I am only going to live here another year and a half (I am getting out of the military)..so I will not do anything drastic. What is your total height? I am not wanting a Body Lift at all..just suspention. hmmm I guess I am in search of a more slim basket..
I also have heard of a 4 incher but I just looked up wilderness and it said they had a 5 " and a 6"..

My garage door opening is around 8 feet and my rig is very close to that now with all the lift. I haven't measured lately, but I know it ain't by much and ain't no way anymore height can be added and still fit.
Next mod...putting a suspension lift on my garage door!

The top of my wilderness 4" tall roof rack is 6" above the top of the factory rail. With my OME 891s and 32" tires I have to pull the roof rack to get my truck into our garage.
Not that I can keep the runner in there anyway - it's just a one-car that my wife claims domain over. There are no hard feelings on my part since she has to park way to one side because of my motorcycles. Plus it was built in 1935, so I'm just lucky I can get the runner in there at all.
Days like today make me wish I had a garage, that's for sure. Over 12" of snow since yesterday!

I've got the Downy 1.5 coils, and the Surco on top with the factory mounts, and BFG 32s. I fit with about 1.5 to 2 inches. My CB Antenna catches though. My neighbor has a 95 LC with the OME lift and 35s, and he fits too, but when he built his house he had them raise the garage opening 2 inches. I swear it looks like he rubs the top when he goes in. Oh and that's with no basket.

i have an '89 4runner on 31's with stock suspension and a yakima load warrier. i don't have the spare tire in the basket yet. the fit in my garage is very close with just the basket, i don't think it'll fit when i put the spare on there. it's no worry for me, my runner sits outside anyway unless i need to bring it in the garage to work on it. next time i get a chance, i'll do some measurements and let you know how high the load warrier is off the roof. i'm thinking about 8 inches though.

My '01 has a 1½" body lift and a I just installed a Kargo Master Kilimanjaro (Kargo Master) about a week ago. The Kiliman is a 4½" basket, weighs a mere 30-35lbs with the mounting brackets, and has a load rating of 500lbs. The "C channel up" mounting brackets add another 3"- 4" in height. If you want, I'll measure the overall height when I get home. I went with the Kiliman cause it much lighter than the Bushman (steel) or Wilderness (steel).
I've had both the Wilderness and Kargo Master and personally, I think the Bushman's just as good as the Wilderness, but much cheaper.

I remember the good ol days of parking in garages. Im lucky to fit into the carport at my current place. I have 3 or 4 inches max above my spare tire. You lowriding runners are lucky. You have semi warm places to work on your rigs. Blue

For you guys with the baskets/racks, do those of you with lights mounted on them have any problem using your racks for canoes/kayaks?
I'm looking for a wilderness basket for my rack, then mounting 2-4 lightforces on the basket, but I am afraid of not being able to carry anything long up there, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of why I am buying it.
A canoe looks like you could just tuck the lights inside the belly-up, but it may be tricky without ripping the lights off. Anyone still carry stuff with the lights ontop?

the bolts for the lights on mine are semi-loose, so that they fold back if the touch a branch to avoid breakage. I can just fold mine foreward flat, and have room for my kayak or any other long load on the basket.
