Fuel Pump Upgrade Results
Yesterday my brother in law installed an upgraded Walbro fuel pump in my 98' S/C 4runner based on the feedback I received on this forum. He has been a Toyota tech for about ten years and we were able to use the dealership facilities for the install. Before the install, the 4runner would stumble at higher rpms or when it was really working hard (i.e. trying to maintain speed up a large hill or under hard acceleration.) After the install, the stumble was gone and the S/C seems to pull throughout the rpm band. Unfortunately, I do not have an EGT meter or fuel/air meter but the car is running much better.
We also cleaned the throttle body and maf, and together with the fuel pump upgrade, the idle is much smoother.

In hindsight, it would have been helpful to do the TB and MAF cleaning after determining the impact, if any, of the fuel pump upgrade....in order to isolate the improvement. My intention with the fuel pump upgrade was to hopefully reduce EGT and to begin the fuel system upgrade process. Next step - save up for the injector/injector controller upgrade.
We also installed Bilstein shock/struts and the handling definetely improved as a result.

Sounds like you are speaking from experience. At first glance, I thought the rear shocks would be straight forward. It actually took longer to do the rear shocks than the front. The fuel pump ended up being the biggest pain in the ass, and this was with the benefit of a vehicle lift and transmission lifter we used to position and raise/lower the tank.
