Hey folks,

Hopefully you guys can bare with me a bit, I'm really a GM guy.
But, I'm seriously looking for a Toyota pick-up.
Can anybody tell me what years the trucks came with fuel injection and a solid straight axle ?
What year did they begin with fuel injection, and when was the last year of the solid axle.
I really appreciate all of your help.

85 was the first for EFI and last year for solid axle, all toyota pickups were solid axle from 79-85

Be forewarned, the fact that the '85 was the only one to come with both a solid axle and a fuel injected engine makes them somewhat desirable to enthusiasts, so you might have to pay a premium for it. Although a pickup should still be cheaper than a 4Runner....

 

you could always get a solid axle and swap in a EFI motor. Probably cheaper than buying a truck with an EFI and converting to solid axle.

 

i think putting a straight axle underneath is more straightforward. while the EFI motor is a bolt-in swap, the wiring and such is a pain

 

you might wanna search for solid axle vs. IFS .
There's a lot of post about swaping the axle using IFS truck or start with Solid ax truck.
In my opinion, it's better to buy IFS truck...can be had with V6, already EFI, rear axle is 3" wider, came with the right power steering if you want Hysteer with solid swap, interior is newer......btw, if you get the 3.0 V6, you can always swap to 3.4...same engine mount.

some late 84's might have efi too, i had a 2wd 10/84 that was efi and it was a sweet little truck. wish i still had it. i wrecked it in to a tree stupid kids.

I want a solid axle fuel injected truck.
I just noticed in a pic of the motor it has a 22 R on the valve cover
After searching posts on here for an hour, I assume ( but not certain ) this is carburated ?
I really like the truck, but I can't stand carbs.
Please tell me this 22R is just a smaller motor with efi. Lie to me if you have to.

22R is the same motor as a 22RE but with a carb. you're gonna have to do some looking to find a fuel injected one, as back in those days not as many people bought all the options like they do now

 

Well now, Dosen't that just suck all kinds.
Any idea what years of 22re's I need to look for that will bolt up to the 5 speed
I'm willing to spend a week-end swapping the motors just to get rid of the cursed carb

 

pretty much any 22re will bolt up, the later ones (90+, i think) have more horsepower

 

Quite a few '84 2WD had EFI. For some reason it wasn't offered in 4WD until the next year.

 

you don't even need to swap out the engine. the EFI parts will bolt to the long block.

if you did swap it out, any 20R/22R/22RE/22RTE will bolt up in the same spot

 

was the '84 efi motors the newer style or older block?

 

Why so anti carb? The Asin carbs are nothing like dealing with a Q-jet (you said you were a GM guy). My old toyota was carb'd and it would run on its side. I tested that a couple times. I never had any trouble starting it in the winter either, even in below 0 situations with 40mph winds.

Can you post the pic of the engine (or give a link to it)? The valve cover on my son's 22RE only says 22R on it. If you are standing in front of the truck, the EFI manifold is on the left (passenger side) and has EFI cast onto the top of it. If it has a round air cleaner over the valve cover, it is carbed.

 

Now if you want to go swaping motors, may i suggest the 2.7L 4cyl. from the tacos? I was looking through a thread on marlins forum about a guy who swapped one in, it looks like it wouldnt be to much more work other than the motor mounts? I think that motor uses some of the same trannies as the 22R(E)?
