Fuel gauge innacurate

So I am on a road trip today and I just drove 180 miles wich 90 of that was in 4wd due to the snow storm today my fuel gauge read half a tank. When I filled up it took 10 gallons. I know for a fact I have a 17 gallons tank. Something is off, what do I need to recalibrate/repair/replace?

I guess you could replace the fuel sending unit replace the wiring harness .

Even so I know for sure none of my Toyota vehicles is the fuel gauge as precise as what you are looking for .

If this is a real issue and is causing all sorts of extra stress in your life.

I am sure for a bunch of $$$$$$ you could get a calibrated liquid flow meter to install on both your pressure line and return line have a computer built to calculate the real time fuel usage .

You would also need to figure in Temperature as the volume of a liquid gets denser as the temperature goes down. Not sure if the wording is correct but it takes more gallons to fill a given space at colder temperatures.

My rule of thumb 120 miles fill it up give or take a few miles

8.5 gallons is half a tank. the gauge has been right on the money except for this one time. I never let my truck get below a quarter tank but I dont want my truck to be reading a quarter tank and it actually be running on fumes
