four wheel low problems
Hello Everyone. I was off roading today and I put my 4runner into 4low a few times and I noticed I was lacking power. So on the way to a friends house i stopped and put it into 4low. Well, there is something wrong and I dont know what. I hit the gas, and the rpm's would go up to about 2000, just reving, not engaging 4 low, and then, it would catch and take off. This worries me and I dont know what is causing this problem. I have never had any 4 wheel drive or 4low problems before. Any ideas of what the problem might be, is appreciated. Maybe it's time to take a look at the fluid in your front diff. If you've been hitting the water holes, you may have taken some in, causing some "I don't wanna go to work" blues in there.
Also, make sure you're getting all the way into 4low. Try coasting at about 3mph in neutral, then shift it in. You may be getting stuck in both ranges momentarily, not sure how though. Good luck!

I doubt this is a transfer problem.
Can't tell without actually driving it, but assuming a 5 spd tranny, it sounds like your clutch is slipping. I don't see any other way the rpm's can go up to 2000 and then engage without some serious CLUNK in the drivetrain.
Check the clutch adjustment and fluid, if your lucky that may be all you need.
Assuming an automatic tranny, check the fluid level. Is it low or burnt?

yeah get that fluid out of there asap, when i got my 95 i didn't know the history of it to well so first thing i did was change every fluid in the vehicle to know what i had.
