so im driving down some highway on my way to NC this past friday night at like 11. going about 75.

background, ever since i put on my 3" suspension lift (alcan pack in rear, ome/tundra in front) ive had this awful vibration

well i found out what that was. i had thought about it being my u-joints binding during rotation, and thats exactly what it was.
while driving my ujoint that is conected to the rear diff fractured and the shaft fell off at that speed.
i slowed down, and puled over.
damage was a tiny dent in the gas tank skid, and the muffler (good thing i hit the clutch) and i lost the rear-most part of the shaft after the slipjoint on the road somewhere.

so luckily i had my tools with me, and i just took off the rear part that was dragging the ground, and stuck it in 4wd, then drove fwd the rest of the way, and the 250 miles back.




so im emailing higangledriveline and hopefully i can get a better shaft.
does anyone else know where i could get one?

Tom Wood made a rear driveshaft for me that is 1/8" thick and is balanced very well. I have had ZERO problems with this shaft. However, you want to speak to Tom and let him know what you want. I spoke to some other guy about maybe getting my front drive shaft done, and being that he was rude, un-informative and didn't seem to care much, I didn't go back to him. So, if you do go to Tom Wood, talk to Tom; great guy. He used my original shaft; retubed it and made it longer.

im looking at my stock shaft, and the splined part is only like 1.5" long. how can this be enough for suspension travel?

 

I can't believe this is from the angle on a 3" lift on a Tacoma. Lots of people run a 3" lift on those and more with no problems I have ever heard of?

 

yeah i know, kind of weird.
what im going to do is just replace the missing and broken pieces from my stocker, since all highangle was going to do was sell me a refurb stocker, lol.

then rotate the rear diff a few degrees up to match.

You sure the u-joint wasn't just bad or that something else isn't out of balance? I know that Rick bent his driveshaft slightly at Tellico a couple of years ago and the vibration was really bad-so bad that he pulled the driveshaft and drove home in front wheel drive.

 

yeah it was probably a combination of the wrong angle and a bad ujoint...

but id like to rotate the diff for clearance reasons too. plus it gives me more opportunity to tig.
