Fog lights
#1
I just bought my first 4Runner last week (SR5 2000) and was wanting to get some fog lights for it right away. Living in San Francisco Bay Area they are a life saver.
I noticed that on the front bumper there is a space with small round false covers. Is this for fog lights or just decoration? Is there a better placement area and what is the best set up (product) for my 4Runner? Is OEM in this case the way to go?

I too am looking at putting some on mine. The Toyota lights are $262.00 and that comes with everything. Hella also makes a set Micro DE www.performanceproducts.com that are $199.00. I am not sure which way I am going yet.
Hope that help.

Just to be clear, the Toyota kit you are referring to is the Hella DE kit and it is a dealer installed item that can be purchased anytime. The true OEM kit is made by Stanley and costs $720 for just 2 lamps and 2 brackets. Most of the wiring is already in place and all you would need is the Toyota stalk w/ fog switch and plug in relay (and big $$$).

I was at the dealer last Wed and they had information on fog lights for the 4Runner to fit in the factory mounts. They were advertised as Toyota factory lights $262 for the complete kit. The guy at the parts counter did not indicate they were made by Hella, he said they were Toyota.

You would definitely be better off to try and fit some aftermarket fogs into the stock opening rather than buying them new from the dealer. I recently tried to find a replacement Stanley fog light because of a cracked lens and the dealer wanted about $350 for one lamp. I ended up getting one at a salvage yard here in B'ham for about $100. Several people on here have retrofit some Piaa fogs into the stock openings, I believe. Hopefully they will reply here.

I recently bought and installed the Toyota OEM fog light kit for my 2000 SR5 which is the Hella Micro DE's for ~ $200.00. They install in the small, round openings next to the parking lights in the front bumper. Installation is per the instructions and took me about 1 1/2 hours (pretty good, considering I had never removed any parts of the dash before). Everything you need is in the kit. Other than bolting the brackets on, bolting the lamps to the brackets and plugging the lamps into the existing harness, the wiring under the dash and steering column required some dash and steering column cover removal which took the most time.
I'm very happy with the lamps. I will, however, change the wiring sometime since the fogs will only work when the headlights are on low beam when wired per the instructions. The stock, H3 bulbs are 55 watt. You can upgrade to 100 watt bulbs, but I personally am hesitant with concerns of heat damage.
There are a lot of aftermarket fog lights that have gotten excellent reviews from others in the forum.

The switch for the lights that came with the kit I discussed above goes in one of the blank openings in the left side of the dash. My 2000 has 3 blanks, if I recall. They pop out very easy as the blank is spring loaded. The switch that came with the kit was an exact fit. Unfortunately, it is unlit. I suppose you could get the Toyota lighted switch, p/n 00550-35976, separately.

I have the Hella Fog's on my 2000, and it was the first mod I did. It was very simple, and a great get-to-know-your-truck-mod. I mounted my switch just below where the factory switch would have been. I opted for the lazy way, and didn't get a Toyota switch. It's out of the way, and doesn't bother me any so oh well!
I think it took me only about 1 1/2 hours too, most of the time was trying to make sure the lights ligned up perfectly in the slots, so no gaps would be showing.
If you decide to go with the Toyota switch, you just pop out the existing plug, and in it goes!

Fog Lights
I was thinking of adding some Hella Micro DE fog lights to my 2000 SR5. Do I need to order from Performance Products to insure that I get the right mounting brackets, or are the brackets already installed? Thanks.

Out of the Fog
Thanks to everyone for their respone to my interest in fog lights. The Toyota dealer near my house has the Hella Micro DE for $250 but I have checked around and have found them for as low a $199. But I am going to take a closer look at what Piaa has to offer. Does anyone have part #'s or model #'s of the Piaa lights that will work in that space?

There currently is a thread on this forum regarding the Hella Micro DE's. You can get the OEM Toyota kit which has the Hella Micro DE's, brackets, relay, switch, wiring, etc.. I don't have the p/n handy that I ordered for my 2000 SR5, but I was able to get the kit on-line for $199 + s&h. I'm not positive if the PP kit is identical to the Toyota OEM kit.
