hey. so on the ne4roc's wheeling trip last weekend, i pretty much crushed mu muffler, and it is in need of being replaced. i am thinking about going with the flowmaster exhaust. 40 series to be exact. only question is..is the sound too much inside?i don't mind hearing a nice note inside, but at the same time, i don't want that straight pipe sound either. thanks guys.

What kinda rig are we talkin? If its a 4-banger I'm not sure about the sound...if its the 3.slow then it will be fine inside the cab, nothing GREATLY noticeable outside except for a nice rumble at idle and up until about 2k on the tach...after that the engine noise drowns out the exhaust.

well i really like my flowmaster. sounds pretty badass on the 3.0. nice low and high end, and not very loud inside the cab

 

ive got the flowmaster 40 series on my 99 s/c 4runner. i love the sound. it is a constant droning sound even w/ windows up. i like it. not too bad, but noticeable. outside idling its not loud at all. im very satisfied. i think mufflers shouldnt be so much about the sound, but it seems to be that way. id say go with it, it sounds nice.

 

Waiting to get up the money to put mine on...but I got the super 40 that flows a little more and probably is a little louder and am going up to a 2 1/4" pipe from cat back.

 

The engine will drown out any sound from the flowmaster. I don't even hear the exhaust inside at all, only engine noise...

 

Did you guys know that the Delta flow system or whatever Flowmaster calls it actually messes up the flow of your exhaust.? It restricts flow. The only good thing about those little ridges in the motor is that if done right you could control the sound waves and move the waves to a area or db that you want. Air flow is best when there is no restrictions, like straight thru mufflers. But with straight through muffler the problem is the sound absorbtion. Many companies try to absord sound with fiberglass in mufflers. If you want to get a good flow muffler get one that has no air restrictions. I can reconmend you to try Magna Flow mufflers. Straight thru design, pretty good sound absorbtion, and no stupid bee buzzing sound. And one more thing they are stainless, NO RUSTING. Hope that helps.

 

the flowmaster 40 is loud, i have one on my 22r .... i do also have a huge intake though.... i liked the sound of my straight pipe, but it pissed off a really close friend/neighbor over 1/4 mile away one morning when i started up my truck..... back on my muffler went...

it is loud cruising, nowhere near as loud as straight pipe, but loud nonetheless.... i love mine though, but I am wierd......

A certain amount of restriction is a good thing. Read up on it.


With another problem being loss of power depending on application of pipe size, headers, and cat. Yeah, no restriction flows better but with no back pressure your only asking for trouble.

 

Yes, your right about the engine size and other factors, like force induction or na, and motor size. It's also true that some back pressure is needed to help the flow. Like anti-reversion headers or pipes, they actually created back pressure to help move exhaust flow. You have to create back pressure at the right area for it to help with the flow. Or even better creating a venturi system, like the carb's to move exhaust flow faster. Back pressure at the exit of a system does not help. Little chanels like the Delta flow distrubs the flow of the exhuast too much. Actually its a myth that no back pressure is bad. It might have been true for older model engines, if you were to have not enough back pressure, there was engine failure. But todays engines could run will no back pressure because technology and the clearance of motors are better. The only drawback you have is unuseable torque or hp with out back pressure. All the hp and torque is moved to the higher rpms. My Civic ran open header for almost a year before I had the funds to put the exhaust on. My neighbors hated me.

 

2.7 w/ flowmaster and stock cat. Still sounds rather quiet. Most people don't notice at all unless I'm on the skinny pedal.

 

I got a Delta40 flowmaster...sounds good but I don't have any interior, so it is pretty loud.

Have you considered the Vortex muffler? I've had it on both of my rigs, 3.4 and 3.0 and I love it. With the 3.4 it was pretty loud, but with the 3.0 it wasnt quite as loud, which I'm guessing is because of the reduced airflow. Still sounds killer though when you get on it. So I'd immagine it will sound excellent on a 4cy. If (or when) I get my 22re'd pickup I'm definetly going to put one on. Hit up Jason B on the forums, he sells the vortex muffler now.

 

I have a 40 series on my 3.4 and love the sound. Its nothing like a V8, but its pretty loud and not ricey. My little brother has a 40 series on his 2.7 taco and you can hear it, its just not nearly as deep as mine

 

Everyone that hears mine thinks it's a V8. The mic on my camera is so darn good, it makes sound louder than it is.
