It's been a while since I've been on the forum but I'm doing brakes over this weekend and I came across this thread and it sounds like a great upgrade. My question is, will this work on the 2nd gens? I've got a '95 and I'm not sure if the placing of caliper bolts holes, etc...are the same.

I was out buying car polish and such today and got to asking the guy about a price quote. For this brake upgrade would be around $300. Not too bad. It would be nice to find a junk yard or a wrecked one, but up here those are hard to come by. Depending on how work goes, if I don't get my lift, I'll be doing this.

Just refresh everyone who has logged on to this thread. I did this upgrade to my 1998 4runner with stock 16" OEM alloy wheels. I used the Tundra calipers and rotor from a 2001 Tundra which I beleive had the 199mm brakes. The only mod I had to do was to trim (file actually) the inner dust shield so the rotor would clear properly. Take a look at my write up. I explained and show you everything I dodo.
To answer the question on Gen 2, I do not believe this upgrade will work on your 1995. Totally different brakes. I would not even attempt. Another thing to remember is anytime you have to grind on a wheel or caliper to make iit clear can be an issue later. I would not recommend this mod if you have to do this. I was able to do my upgrade using the 199mm. I would encourage you to re-read my write up. Several other threads mention how to tell the difference between the two setups on the Tundra (199-231)

Done and oh baby are these smooth and sweet. Bolted right up and i can confirm the BIG 231 DO FIT ON THE STOCK 5 SPOKE STAR RIMS. No modification other then the dust shield required.

GSGALLANT - "Good writeup. Overall well written article. Just some additional info for you... The stock 16" steel wheels (2002 4Runner) fit over the 231mm Tundra calipers with no grinding of the wheels required. However, the stock spare steel wheel that came on my truck has no chance of fitting without rubbing, and no grinding of the wheel is possible to make it fit. If I get a flat up front, I have to move a rear tire up front, and put the spare on the back."
It seems 2002 steel spare is different from previous years steel spares. I was going to change all my 3 spoke alloy to the steelies , but I guess they won't work with Tundra brakes.

Hey.... Is there a way to check to see if the 231s will fit aftermarket wheels with stock backspacing? Or has anyone did the upgrade with ProComp wheels? Should I just eyeball how much space I have now with stock calipers??
I know there are a lot of threads on this brake upgrade, but this is the largest and been around the longest. If I missed the answers to the questions I'm asking, sorry. Must have missed it.
