Once again I am in debt to the huge knowledgebase here at Yotatech! Squeeking was driving me crazy, and I wasn't looking forward to taking everything apart to replace bushings. This fix was super easy, effective, and I was done before the first beer was finished! Thanks again!

After my first "debt" to yotatech, I contributed to it. Don't forget this site isn't free for those who run it...

You make a good point, and I am now a "Contributing Member". Heck, with as much time as I waste on this site when I'm at work, I should have done it a long time ago!

Thanks,
Ben

I did this too. Am noticing throwout bearing sqeak now. Is it possible that the new spring could be causing too much "up" pressure??

It's not likely... and I'd say impossible if I was a clutch expert. The extra up pressure does not affect your throwout bearing, in fact it will take pressure OFF of your throwout bearing if it does anything at all. When the clutch pedal is fully disengaged, there should be little or no pressure between your throwout bearing and your pressure plate. One problem could be that your clutch system needs adjustment, if the throwout bearing is resting on the pressure plate when it is disengaged, it will cause LOTS of unnecessary wear. Someone else might be able to chyme in and give instructions on how to diagnose the problem.

One thing you could try to fix the squeaking is spraying some white lithium grese, onto the throwout bearing, through the boot that covers the fork that holds the throwout bearing, the only problem would be getting grease on your clutch plate/pressure plate, which is bad. Do so at your own risk!

Just preformed this mod. One of the best things I ever did to my 4Runner!!

Picked up a spring replacement kit at Advanced. I believe I replaced it with a 6x7/16th spring but ended up cutting about a half inch off each end to get me more pressure. Discovered that my squeek is still there (from the piston goiing into the MC?) but I love the change in pressure on the clutch!

Mine also squeaked after the spring replacement-just added a little lubricant and no more squeak.

cool fix, but new problem showed up

Hey all, thanks for the great fix! last week my clutch pedal went to the floor and would not return without some assistance. It did this to me once before and being naive as I am, I took it to a service center and they told me that the master cylinder needed to be replaced. So, a couple of hundred dollars later, the pedal operated normal. I thought I was in the clear, until last week. This time I did a little searching online and came upon this forum with this awesome fix. I followed the advice and pulled the large spring off and noticed that the groove worn into the clutch pedal mechanism was so deep that the large spring was actually pushing the pedal to the floor. Jeesh! Stupid engineers!

So, now the pedal is back to normal, but a new problem was lying underneath. Now my clutch is not acting normal. Instead of having the normal 2 or 3" of travel in order to get the clutch engaged, I have about .5" of travel. Which makes shifting a chore. There is a fine line between popping the clutch and wasting rubber on the road, and killing the damn thing. Frustrating! Does anybody have any ideas what might have happened? This was not a problem until the pedal went to the floor and didn't return. I wouldn't think that having a spring related pedal problem could cause a clutch problem.

Please Help! I'm lost.

Another satisfied customer. This works great!

I went to Autozone and found a Help! Spring Assortment pack. There is a 6" spring in the pack that will work if you trim one of the ends down a bit. This fix cost me $3.99 and about 15 minutes vs. $25 and 3 hours. Sweet!

I elected not to trim off the bushing/spring bracket on the pedal assembly. It rubs ever so slightly but not enough to be of worry.

What a great mod. I did mine this evening. Thank you, thank you, thank you.!

On side note, while looking for a spring I ran into a former Ford parts manager. He said when Ford used this type of over the top spring, it put so much stress on the firewall that Ford had to provide a firewall reinforcement kit on warranty.

Maybe but the squeaking sounds I get are related the pivot arm in the Clutch bell housing and not the pedal. See previous page.

An extra, I have always hated the clutch pedal feel. That's gone now and it feels wonderful. This is one of those small tweaks that makes a huge difference. Thanks again.

That squeeking was driving me absolutely crazy.

ok, I had enough of the heavy stock spring after returning from driving multiple smooth operating manuals while on holidays in Europe (nice diesels over there too but that is for another thread). But I didn't find the torsion spring that easy to remove. How did you guys get it out? Levering with a big screwdriver and watch out or what??
Thanks

edit: I got it out but the feel is pretty similar

So now that it is out, what is making the clutch hard/stiff to depress? Master or slave cylinder not working properly or is this the normal feel? I will not need a return spring as hard as it is still.I should probably have left the torsion spring as it would actually have helped against the stiffness (with a knee injury and back problem a stiff clutch is a problem).
