FIPK or cut out my airbox?
#64
I was pricing FIPKs until I did a bit of research here
. Since then I've put a 4" deckplate in my '04 Taco, and removed the elbow from the wifes' 4runner. Both mods provided acceleration gains you can feel. The deckplate mod is just louder. Still testing gas mileage. I have gone from aftermarket (K&N, Amsoil) back to OEM air filters since reading the "deisel" tests. Thanks Yotatech!

I put on a K&N FIPK this weekend. Prior to install, I did a crude test for perfomance gain. I'd like to hear comments on my test. I have a five speed 3.4L Taco so those with automatics can't do this one.
Elapsed time from zero to 70 mph starting (from dead stop) in third gear. It takes about a second and a half to get the clutch completely engaged.
Before the FIPK, 17 seconds....after, 13.
I thought this test would be good because it gives me a relatively large block of time and the full power band.
Any comments?

You're saying you lost 4 seconds by installing a K&N? Sorry bro, but no way. That's a good way to burn a few thousand miles off your clutch though. Yikes!
A better method is to put the cruise on in 3rd gear and do a 30-70 run at WOT. All you have to do is slam the gas down and start and stop a stopwatch. Do it three times in each direction (on a deserted road) and then get the average.
Don't waste your time though. If anything, you have lost HP with that mod.

cut it out....for all you 1st gen owners heres an intake mod for all of us

in that hole is a k&n drop in and you can drill out hte bottom...i was going to but i dont want to drill it out without having a spare airbox so as of now mine is solid on the bottom.
and just for ˟˟˟˟s and giggles while were taking about air heres a pic of my intake manifold....isnt it clean and beautiful?

Would the elbow mod make any difference on my 2.4 22re? The k/n drop in didn't seem to make much of a difference.
I'd be scared to drill a hole, i do alot of mudding and the winters are pretty wet here.

I did the FIPK, and it sounds cool at full throttle. When I'm at idle, it does make a lot of noise that's very close to an old belt, but mine are fine. Anyone else have this problem or has anyone else had this problem in the past? What did you do to fix it?

The FIPK is the way to go. Yes, it cost more but it is well worth it. Especially if you have LC Engineering header, LC Engineering high flow cat, LC Engineering big bore throttle body, LC Engineering Mild Cam, and Flowmaster split exhaust. The FIPK with the other mods really kicks ass and makes a lot more top end power which is awesome. I can chirp in 2nd without even trying.

Don't cut holes in the box. No reason too. By removing the elbow you get the same results. If you do it right you can pop the elbow back in or out when ever you want to. I also screend the elbow hole on the inside of the box to keep out little critters. With the lip on the outside of the box I just trimed down my elbow until I could snap it in or out.

Probably a stupid question, but: I have an 87 4Runner, and since I want to get EVERYTHING out of it I can, I was wondering if I could do something like this deckplate mod to my airbox. Like cut a round hole in the bottom of my airbox, similar to the deckplate mod. I have a drop-in K&N in now, but would doing something like that have any effect at all? Say maybe with a screen over it to keep the big chunks out...?
