Finally can't stand it anymore - the clock doesn't work!

Hi everybody - the clock in my 1997 SR5 isn't working and I finally can't stand it anymore.

It used to work intermittently and when it would go out I'd simply tap the dash and it would come back on. Now it's not working at all.

When it does come on it was keeping time correctly, so it must be receiving power somehow.

How do I go about troubleshooting this?

Thanks!

G

Sounds like there's a loose connection to it perhaps? especially if you can tap the dash and it comes on temporarily. I'd yank it and check all the connections to it. If the connections are good, you might want to get a multimeter and check to make sure it's getting power. If both of those check out ok, it's probably time for a new clock.

mine has been doing this for about 6 months as well. i thought i had something loose back there or didn't seat the connector well enough after fiddling around with that stuff the last time i had it apart. i took it apart last weekend, reseated everything and tried it again, no luck. when i had the truck on i wiggled each wire and nothing happened, i'm thinking it's just time (no pun intended) to get a new clock. the one i have now isn't just broken, it comes on nice and brite but then fades out both quickly and slowly at any given time, then i thump it with my finger and it comes on again for a few seconds and the fades again.
i was actually thinking of taking it out and forming a little area behind it for a storage compartment, it fits my cell phone perfectly. besides, i've got a watch and there's a clock on my cd player so i always know what time it is.

i'm no help with diagnosing the problem, but i just thought i'd tell you my woes. misery loves company!

Location is a good place for an alarm light or switches.

pattycakes77, how were you able to access the clock in the first place? I'd like to pull mine out and have a look at it but I'm not sure how to start? How do I get it out? How many wires are attached to it?

Thanks for the help!

I think this is a very common problem with clock on 3rd gen. The easiest way to fix it, unfortunately, is to replace the clock.

i been having thr same issues, it will work good for a week then go bad a few days. I'm actually looking to get a nice small compass and stick it in there instead. I don't think it's power wire since mine would also display the correct time, there's even some older lexus models that the radio digits/numbers would just start to fade pretty bad. Seems like a common problem. Try to make a mini-mod like evryone else suggests, storage, switch, lights or a compass. Good luck.

The clock on my tacoma has never worked. No matter how much I tap on it, it just continues to look like a blank filler panel because it didn't come with this model.
