Failed Smog Check
#21
I passed smog barely, I was at the max for NOx at 15 Mph. To pass, I had to put my wife's stock rims on the rear. This is going to be a pain for future smog checks, but at least I am good for the next 2 years!!!

smog?? wth are you talking about? yeah there is smog everywhere around here... NOx testing? huh???
I searched but I can't find an explanation as to what this "SMOG" is
edit: NM sorry forgot I'm in MI...

but yeah, it'd be nice if we even had some regulations

I had high NOx and a new pre-cat o2 sensor was the fix. This was on my '97 runner with stock gears and 285's. As others mentioned, tire size should not be an issue.
Pretty sure the same thing happened on my '97 T100 (35's), but that was a while ago so I can't quite remember the details.
The o2 sensors just seem to wear out after a while and then they tend to run lean.

AHHHHH! i also failed my smog check ! plz help!
failed 15mph test NO (PPM)- i failed that, everything else passed
pass 25mph test
i have stock everything except for a 2" lift w/ 33's on. i have tried 3 times each mech saying different things that it might be. 1." u have to get a new egr valve" which i dont think i even have, 2. "replace ur tires with stock", 3. "get a new cat". man i dont know what to do .
so from reading the thread i think i should clean the maf and do a seafoam thing?

My experience with these engines has been that high NO is a result of running lean (too hot) and it is caused by the forward oxygen sensor going bad. I'll betcha a new sensor is the fix. Especially if you're anywhere near the 100-120k mark.

ok, so i cleaned the maf and did a fuel system clean. plus i went to the dealer and got a 120k tune up. and i still failed. big time failure. before i did everythign it was max NOx 580 and i got 620 ... now i have 1600 at 15mph and this time i didnt pass my 25mph test either . dang what should i do now!!!

Sounds very lean right now (ie the problem you were having should now be alot easier to track down because it is so far out of spec). You can replace your A/F sensor, but I'd have toyota hook it up to their diagnostic and look at all the sensors before you just start playing parts replacement.

my friend recommended premium gas so i think that contributed to my high NOx. but yea truck was hot an the oil was changed recently.
i think i might have to go to the mech for this cuz its way outta whack.
