I can't believe someone suggested glasspacks...
1 - 2.25 to 2.5" pipe MAX.
2 - I installed a Jardine on my ex-wife's 94. ~$200 from Perf. Products, which is why I bought it. Nice aluminized system, decent sound, great price.

You want loud and keep it legal? Go with a single chamber flowmaster or single chamber flowmaster knockoff. I would suggest 2.25" max on the 3.0. I'm running an 18" magnaflow and think it sounds great... but at the same time I did not want anything really loud.
You're buddy probably looked at your muffler and noticed that it was offset which will make it harder to just cut the muffler off and weld a pipe in place unless you have a pipe bender.
