This is a follow up from an older post about overheating. My 1998 t4r, 170K started to get a bit hot the other day while driving up a mountain ( as soon as I headed back down temp returned to normal).

It has check engine lights on from bad 02 sensors and I figured it was a good time to bring it into the shop and get everything fixed. My inspection is also bad because of the 02 sensors.

My mechanic did an exhaust flow test (he mentioned something about bringing the car up to 2500RPM for a few minutes), and he said that my cats are only flowing about 40% and I need a whole exhaust system (holes everywhere), and I need both 02 sensors.

Does anyone have advice on what I should pay fro a new exhaust with cats from the manifolds back? I am not looking for OEM Spec, I just want to run cool and pass inspection? I'm in Northern NJ if anyone has suggestions on where to go.

I have bought Cats from Rock Auto, Napa and my local Independent Auto Parts.

Napa Has all the exhaust parts Napa also sells the Denso Sensors

It sure is nice to get the stainless Lock nuts for the 10mm studs from Toyota

If the exhaust actually has holes and needs to be replaced then get it replaced, otherwise I would just do the cats.

Far as price, that varies by area. I would NOT use the first shop you go to, take it around to at least 4 or 5 shops and get quotes.

Try to find a few of the mom and pop shops as well, they are usually cheaper.

Around here cost for the whole system should not be more then a few hundred with muffler and cat.

 

Thanks for the responses guys, Mineke seems like my best bet right now- they said about $850 with 2 new 02 sensors a new cat, muffler, and the expansion sections that the 02 sensors connect too. The first place I went to was asking for a ridiculous $2,500. I'm going to check out one more Mom and pop shop before I commit.

Does anyone think that it would make sense to make any changes at this point?
Do headers make a big difference on the 3.4? Or a high flow muffler? OR perhaps anything else that should be addressed when tearing out the entire exhaust?

 

If you are doing it anyways, then get a high flow cat.

The muffler is up to you and how much noise you want. I like mine quite personally but up to you. Just make sure they keep it the factory diameter piping of 2.25", 2.5" is about the max you would want although that is overkill for an NA truck.

Headers are not worth the money, just like any other performance mod except boost.
