exhaust fumes
the other day it was REALLY COLD (-13 with windchill) and i was late for work in the morning.
typically, i let the engine idle for a while and just sit in park letting it warm up and giving the oil time to circulate (at the absolute minimum 30 seconds, max 5 mins), and ive been really good about it.
however, this one morning, since i was running late i just turned it on, shifted into drive and went. :pat: the truck sort of coughed (but not really.. hard to explain) and i noticed i was emitting fumes from the tailpipe like i was burning oil (seen this on older pos's).
i drove two blocks with it still happening, then it stopped... and has never happened again.
is this because i just started and went and it was cold, or should i be concerned??
What did this??

Lee-
I would guess it was just running rich as the ECU should be sending the engine more fuel for a cold start...so there was probably just some unburned fuel coming out with the exhaust. I would only worry about it if it becomes a persisitant problem. If you have ever owend older carb'ed vehicles, it wold be similar to the choke staying closed while you try to excellerate and the engine not getting enough air in the mix.

Yep, you always need to let it warm up at least some when it's cold.
-13 windchill is nuthin.
Metal doesn't care about the wind. It was -31 F (-45 wc) this morning here. I have to admit, it was kinda chilly.

I you sure it wasn't just water vapor? If you notice when it is very cold all cars will emit a lot of water vapor or steam into the air untill they warm up. You probably never notice it because the vehicle is warm when you take off.

no, it wasnt vapor, it was blue smoke..
hey, the car has been running great since, though ive decided (after much
-ing to myself) that id rather be late!
thanks for the calming words of wisdom.

Blue smoke is usually burning oil.
Black smoke is unburned fuel.
White smoke is antifreeze.
Grey smoke is your tires.
Blue smoke on start up could be valve seals, valve guides, piston rings. Keep your eye on it. Might just be a fluke thing.

I did too. It was dirty. What, you think we never wash vehicles in the winter?
