Looking for some help. My 22RE has got a rough idle, little miss at idle. I have replaced every maint item there is. It seems when I unplugg my o2 sensor it gets a little smoother. I am at my wits end. Has anybody had this problem.

 

by your fuse box there is a little black box that says diagnostic center. you open the lid and there is a bunch of little plugs you get a peice of wire and jumg 2 of them and your check engine lite will blink a code and will tell you whats wrong. not sure which 2 it is you jump they are lettered it tells on the lid which one is what letter when you flip it open. the haynes manual actually explains this pretty good. hope this helps

 

My check engine light has not come on. I think its strange the idle got smoother when I unplugged my o2 sensor. When it is cold the idle is smooth as silk. Whne it heats up, its start idling with a little miss.

 

i had the same problem on my 87 4 runner with 22 re , and i never did find out what the problem was , have you tried repalcing the o2 sensor ?

toyo if you do what i explained it'll blink a code even if your lite does not come on during normal driving. there even a code for if everything is working properly. it could be something is wrong even though the lite doesn't come on. theres even a code for if the o2 sensor is bad and there is different codes for each sensor on the engine.

 

I believe they made the change in test connectors in '88, the earlier ones were a round two wire connector on the driver's fender just behind the air box.

Have you tried cleaning the throttle body?
Any Vacuum leaks, such as from a cracked hose?
Is the idle speed within spec? If low try raising it, if you don't know how I can explain.

 

they did have the diagnostic black box on 87 22re like toyo's. i did a tranny on a 87 1st gen 4 runner with a 22re this weekend and it had the box.

Can anybody scan the Haynes Manual for me. I need to know I am looking for when my light flashes a code.
I have cleaned injectors, throttle body, plugs, wires, cap, rotor button, pcv valve, fuel filter, air filter, adjusted valves. I cant find any vacumn leaks. I am getting good vacumn. What is the procedure for cking out the egr valve???

 

I've acquired an Idle problem too....as I'm driving and I come to a stop.....as I shift down through the gears and slow down it's fine...but when I finally let off the clutch to disengage first....it jumps right up a high idle, till I tap on the gas pedal and it comes down....but the thing is it does it all the time....Could it be the throttle cable? and you had mentioned the throttle body and some kind of adjustment.....Do you mean the throttle positioning sensor?

 

By the way...I'm got a 88 22RE....lol

 

I would clean your throttle body, make sure all your linkage is good. If you need assistance with the throttle body let me know.

I had that same problem. I would have to tap the gas to get it to come down.

I believe my probelem was the dashpot. The dashpot controls the trottle so that it doesn't slam shut. It allows the throttle to close slowly.

Right now my problem, is basically the dashpot slowing the throttle down too much. I changed the adjustment, so its more then likely adjusted wrong. When I push the clutch in the RPM's drop too slowly.

I have a CODE CHECKER. The black diagnostic box is indeed on my 87. You basically plug the check box in with your engine at normal operating temperature and TURNED OFF. Then you take turn the ignition to accessory. The check engine light will blink at you telling you a code. The code will continue to cycle.

The check box is just a jumper wire between two points in the diagnostic box. I will look at my check box later tonight.

Of course according to the post on the dashpot I had a code 6. I erased that because that code was associated with a disconnected vacume (hose with dirty soot) on the back of my valve cover.
