Unhappy Engine trouble

The check engine light on my 4 Runner came on yesterday so I went to Auto Zone and have them look at it. The Auto Zone guy came up with code PO171. I took out the MAF and cleaned it with warn water and a paper towel. I reinstalled everything and my truck was running fine. Today I started my truck up to let it warn up. After about a minute it stalled. I tried restarting a few time and it come on and then quickly cut off. Any help would be grateful.

Jay will see this and he will have a good answer. You might want to pull the EFI fuse in the meantime to reset it to see if that will help. Also, you do have gas in it, right?

Yes I do have gas in the Runner. Last week I did the intake silencer mod and did the Deckplate mod more than a year ago.

Make sure your MAF sensor plug is on all the way. I know on my mothers camry when the maf plug came loose the engine stalled and would'nt stay running for more then a few seconds after i tried to restart it. But it sounds like a MAF problem you have. Just make sure everthing is plugged back in properly.

Good Luck

P0171 is very contagious. It is the Small Pox(tm) of the diagnostic trouble codes. Be very scared.

Your symptoms definitatly resemble that of a dirty MAF.

*Edit*
Actually, upon further review, It more sounds like you have a mis-routed hose of some sort. P0171 is a Lean Malfunction. Having a mis-routed/disconnected hose creating a vacuum leak is a likely problem.

Hey, I am having the same problem, when i start my car, it says on for a few seconds (sometimes up to 15 seconds), acting like its going to run fine, and then dies, as if i just turned off the key. My check engine light has not come on however, could i be having the same problem?

Well, I just got a call from the mechanic shop... It was my MAF. He said something had worn a hole through the top of it, and I didn't really have another choice but to replace it. I guess that seems reasonable, but what could wear a hole in it, and if i get a new one, would the same thing happen? He said it was going to be 600 bucks for everything, only about 70 for the labor and the rest the part. From what I have heard, this sounds about right. If you have any clue on what could wear a hole in my MAF or any tips, your advice would be apreciated.

Thanx

Could the hole be patched? Also, does a 90 model 3.0L have a MAF sensor and where would it be?
