Engine Backfire

I have 97 4 cylinder 4Runnter with manual transmission. Recently I notice that
the car is backfiring a little bit. I have been reading some repair manuals and I am suspecting it has to do with EGR valve. What do you think? I am thinking may be the EGR valve is either sticky or the pipe that routes exhaust gas to the EGR valve is clogged. Contrary to my prognosis, I tested the EGR by applying vacum to the valve when the car is idling and the engine stalled and eventually died which is a correct behavior when EGR is in GOOD condition. Any comments would be appreciated. Also what would be the best cleaner to use to clean EGR valve/pipe?

How are the ignition components?
Plugs, cap, rotor, coil, wires, etc?
Also check the TPS.
