Get a multimeter and check the circuit according to the diagram to ensure no shorts or breaks in the wires.
Could also be the brake light switch but check everything thoroughly and you should solve your problem pronto.

This is weird. It ran fine yesterday. I parked it last night, came out this morning and now it's stuck in Park again. It's very intermitent.

Sounds like you got a bare wire shorting/grounding out killing the circuit...look at your trailer hitch wiring harness and check to see that the metal connections aren't touching metal, if you don't have a cap on it, put some tape over it and then inspect the wires for cuts, nics, etc.

Good call. I will check the trailer wiring harness when I get it home for lunch. I don't think the end if wrapped up.

I checked the trailer wiring harness and didn't see anything causing the problem. Looks like I might be stuck taking it to a shop due to my lack of time

I am with Steve on this one bad switch or it just needs adjusting since you mentioned no brake lights and that activates the release for the gear selector, check the switch it located usually up by the brake lever. I have seen this before not on a 4runner but on another toyota (ended up replacing the switch).
If you can get someone to help try to manually pushing the switch by hand if you see brake lights come on bet you can shift into gear and if thats the case you may just have to adjust the switch in more.

I am haveing the same problem ....I was told to disconect the TCU and shift each gear manualy by unpluging the tcu you bi-pass the comp and all electronics and if it still works each gear then you can rule out any mech problems

Wow. I guess I never updated this thread.

Somehow, my fusebox by the driver side kick panel had worked itself loose. I could tip the box in one direction with my hand, and it would shift out of park. If I moved the fuse box the other direction it would be stuck. I ended up have to redo some of the wiring and use some straps to secure it. No problems since

This happened to my 4runner, but it threw the fuse so I had more of a lead where to look.

stuck in park no brake lights

Check your fuse for the brakes. My 91 did that and it was s blown brake fuse.]I got it home using the Shift Lock Override button. I noticed a few things though:

1) Brake Lights aren't working.
2) Steering wheel doesn't lock when in park.
3) I am not able to shift into Neutral w/key in Accs position.

My parking brake has been disconnected for a long time so I don't think that is the issue.

I'm thinking there's some safety solinoid or something causing the problem?[/QUOTE]
