So there I am, working on the runner last nite. I get back from the hardware store and notice that the electric fan had come on...which rarely happens during these cold Seattle days. So an hour later, it is still running but the engine is nolonger hot, just barely warm.

Next i decide to disconnect the battery, just so I have have some quiet while working. And when I reconnected the battery, the fan comes right back on. Does anyone have any idea what the hell is up with that? Could the temp sensor be corrupted? Cause I really don't feel like taking it in to a shop or the dealer, ugh, if it is something I can take care of.

Any diagnostic hints would help.

 

A temp sensor malfunction would do it. Pull a wire off the sensor(on the rad) see if it stops.

 

Do you have the adjustable thermo switch? What kind of elec fans set-up? Flex-a-lite or what?

This definetly sounds like a thermoswitch problem to me. If yours is adjustable like mine, make sure the knob is not cranked all the way down to -. The control boxes are pretty cheap, so you shouldnt have an issue getting a replacement. I think summit will ship it next day air or two day air for a pretty reasonable price.

I do believe that this is a stock fan. But there is no mention of it in the manual and there does not appear to be a thermoswitch. There is also an aux fuse box next to the stock one in the engine compartment, which also does not appear in the manual. There are three fuses labeled 'CD FANS'.

I also thought it might be a burnt out wire er something, cuz when I drove from point A, where it started, to point B, on my way home, it stopped when I parked. But then it started back up again when I shut the door. So I slammed the door again and it stopped. I went inside and not 5 minutes later, I could hear the fan goin again. Wierd

I'll take a look for the switch if it has one and try to find the wire that powers it, or fuse. :chicken:

 

If it's a Flexalite fan, they'll replace it for free. The thermoswitch started acting a little screwy on mine after driving through a big mud puddle. I emailed 'em and they told me to fax a copy of my reciept. A new switch was on my doorstep the next day.

A stock elec fan on a RWD Toyota? Never heard of that before...
