Early Tacoma 4x4 3rz to 2rz swap
Hey guys,
My truck got stolen about a month ago and I'm starting to look at options for a new rig. My truck was a '95 Pickup 22re 4x4 extra cab (last month or two of the Pickup), and I'm looking to get something as similar as possible to that truck while using the opportunity to move up to a 4th gen for better safety and comfort. I've narrowed it down to a 1997 Tacoma before the grill and headlights changed for 1998.
I didn't mind the lack of power at all and appreciated the mileage in my old truck. I actually like driving under-powered vehicles, as I can drive harder while still being safe and obeying the speed limit, and can get good mileage if I feel like it. I'm toying with the idea of buying a 1997 with a bad motor (there are a couple in my area) and swapping in a 2rz from a 2wd truck. Does anyone know what's involved in a 3rz to 2rz swap? Can I leave the wiring harness intact and just plug in the 2rz ECU? What pieces of the 2rz truck are needed? I don't mind doing a bit of wiring but I'd rather not completely redo the harness. I'm willing to wait long enough to find a 2wd truck of the same year if it's more of a bolt-in.
Bought a $300 Geo Metro in the mean time. 3cyl with 277,000 miles and low compression, and it honestly seems faster than my truck was. I miss the slowness already.
