Even my damn Local toyota stealer can't give me this info. I need to know my front differential ratio for my 2002 Sport Edition 4Runner and as quick as possible. I'd like to get it back on the trails...or even driving again. The front diff in my 4runner is so bad the truck refuses to move as much as 1 ft backwards, and moves frontwards with force. Help please, very appreciated!

I've had the same problems trying to find the diff ratio for my 2001 4Runner, with no luck so far. Just to confuse you more this site has totally different numbers from the offroad.com one.

Assuming the front and rear are the same you can always jack up one rear wheel, spin it 2 times and count the number of times the driveshaft turns. That number is the rear diff ratio.

My 2001 has a code A02A on the door jamb.

First Digit:
Diameter of Ring Gear
A=7.5
B=8.0

Second and Third Digits:
Gear Ratio
01=3.583
02=3.727
03=4.100
04=4.556 or 4.300
05=4.700
06=4.875 or 3.909

Fourth Digit:
Number of Pinions
A=2
B=4
C-2 Pinion OEM limited slip

These are Truck Axle Codes for 94-2004

Whoa... So the truck is only 3 years old and the front diff is hosed?

Before you go changing out the gears, is this because of something you did or is it possible to get it covered under warranty?

 

Wow, the website and the post of codes comes up with different gear sizes as others have stated. One says I have 3.56 gears while the other says I have 3.72. Either way, I guess I'm screwed with 265/75/16's.

Funny thing is the truck still hauls. When I face an incline, I drop the OD and it still wants to go. I can easily go over 90 mph. The only issue I've seen with these gears and bigger tires are the drop off in mpg. I guess I should be satisfied.

WARANTY!! LOL!! I'm the original owner and I clocked 200,000 miles on my 2002. I broke the differential because I drove the truck 45-50miles with a busted CV axle that played and busted the gears in the diff. As for where I'm shopping for parts, I'm buying another diff from a wrecking yard for 300bux with A.D.D. I'll be sure to take pix of the install. But I'm thinking that while the diff is not installed, I should go ahead and install lockers.

 

How the heck did you put that many miles on in 4 years, holy crap!!!

If it's a V6 2002, then it's 4.10 without e-locker and 4.30 with e-locker.

I4's had 3.73 gears.

 

To answer your question, I do alot of driving As for the last years of the 3rd gens, theres was no options for the 4banger, nor was there an option for the Locker...dummys replaced that option for a standard traction control system. BTW, my A-Trac has helped me alot. I'm becoming to dependant to A-Trac.

 

I knew the locker was disq'd in 2000, but I didn't know about the 4 banger, I thought they still had that.

Anyways, about the A-Trac...you are just ahead of your time, don't worry.
