I'm seriously considering a brush guard for my '99 4runner and before I get one I'd like to hear what people have to say about having one. So, does anyone have any good or bad things to say about having one? Compliments, complaints etc...

Also, if you have one, do you also have a bug deflector as well? I live in Colorado and the rocks seriously fly in the winter so I'm wondering if the grill guard will protect the hood well enough or to use both the guard and the bug deflector...?

I have one, along with the OEM bug deflector. It makes the front end of the truck look agressive. However, due to its design (no cross bracing between the uprights), it shakes when you go over bumps.

All in all, I like mine. However, Im probably going to make an X brace for it to stop the shaking.

 

Personally I think they are about as silly as grill guards for rear taillights....

 

don't waste your money. If you want something get a TJM or ARB. If not, then save your money for a real mod

 

To me they look ok but you won't be able to fit a winch on them if you ever decide to go that route. I would save my money for the TJM or a locker more for function than pose.

 

Rigs that are in wrecks w/ grill guards are sorry they have them...all they do is mash the whole front end rather than just the impact spot.

Waste of money IMO but they are "pretty" and "bling". Get a TJM or ARB like others have said or save your money for something else.

 

Plus if you have to change the bulbs in corner lihgts (which might only be once) you'd have to remove the whole guard.

I think Warn might make them. I do know the one I used to have had the removeable guard on the side of the tubes so if you wanted to run with or without it you could. BTW what part of Upstate SC are you from?

I have a brushguard, and while I like it, I regret not saving a little more and buying an ARB instead. They are really for looks. It does support my Hellas really well though.

i have changed my bulbs dozens of times (lots of burnouts with cheapie whites)...

protect vehicle in crash
hold lights
hold winch
tow points

run in to fallen tree safely
weighs more

grille guard:
hold lights
look aggressive
push shopping cart safely

 

a grille guard will push a fallen tree out of the way. Heck, Ive pushed a sidekick out of hte way, in 4LO, uphill before, using my brish guard as a push bumper.

In a light crash, a grille guard will protect the bumper. However, in a big crash, a grille guard will escalate the amount of damage.

 

dont think a grille guard would have the same results as this....
0 damage done to body of land rover, just needed new headlights, not bad for hitting a deer at 75mph.

 

are there other front end replacements other than TJM and ARB? I have a Ranch Hand on my yukon and love it. Too bad they dont make em for runners. The TJM and ARBs are nice, but does Warn or anyone else make any other front end replacements?

 

I believe Warn makes a Transformer series for our 3rd gens. I've not seen one on a 4Runner yet, but did see one on my customer's Silverado at work and it was pretty solid. Check out truckperformance.com they have them there.

 

I second the deer protection thing. I hit a big deer at 30-35 MPH with my brushguard (WAAG?) and it moved back maybe 1/4". No damage at all to my truck, strangely, lots of coarse deer hair on the back?? of my truck.

 

that is quite odd. did the deer survive?
