I'm thinking of carrying a two ton floor jack---it is small(fits in plastic case) but I would neet to get a piece of 1 1/2(or maybe 2'') pipe added(welded) to it--about 4'' long--do you think this would be safe? The problem is after I lifted the factory jack is useless....

 

I have 33's and still use a 20 ton bottle jack.

Hit it at the front cross member or rear axle. I bet you will still have jack left even with 35's.

 

comes up about 1/2'' short--only need about 3 extra inches--think 2'' steel tube will be pretty solid.....

 

That would work...or you can get a hi-lift.

 

The only issue I would see would be width. Floor jacks have a width designed to be stable for the amount of height they can attain. Change the max height of the lift and they could be unsafe. Probably not an issue on a flat garage floor, but could be if you have a flat out on the road somewhere. However, larger floor jacks (with removable saddles) have extenions available to do the same thing.

 

Like Dave said, it can be a bit hairy to work with a floor jack out on the road (or in the dirt). I carry a Hi-Lift:

I would get a hi-lift but they aren't available here in mexico--I think with the extension I should be fine--the jack acually will be about 2'' below its max height this way......maybe I should get a sheet of metal so I can use it in the sand(good wood isn't easy to find down here)........

 

Is shipping from the US out of the question, or just not reliable?

 

the only thing that is reliable is Fed Ex or DHL next day---but the shipping would kill me---I'm pondering a 12 or 20 ton bottle Jack--the weight would be ok becuase I have the HD OME shock/spring combo---what do you think about a bottle jack vs a floor jack?

I can't really comment on the bottle jack - I'm not familiar enough with something that size to give you good guidance. I'm sure someone will pop in though.

 

I tried to use the stock jack on my front end and it topped out about 1/2" shy of the front jack point, according to the manual. I went and bought a 48" hi-lift today but will have to take some chances when using it since I don't have any decent bumpers to do lift from. I'd have to use the side of the body behind the front fenders to lift from to get front tires changed out. Saw this done on a run I went on with someone elses Taco. Didn't bend the body at all.

 

To do this SAFELY (and thus correctly!) you need the "Hi-Lift Bumper Lift". It's cheap, and is the right way to lift your rig with a Hi-Lift when you don't have sliders:

What I did buy that I failed to mentioned was HI-Lift's glorified 2x4 "Off-Road Base" that you put the Hi-Lift on for more stability in the dirt. It is a couple inches tall so I might be able to use that with my bottle jack to get the tire off the ground. I wasn't sure about the bumper lift as the Tacoma bumpers are not the best things to jack off of with the plastic valence on it.

True, but given that we're talking about a Hi-Lift, then you can also use this to safely hook under the door, in the fenderwell, etc.

 

put a piece of 2x6 under the stock jack... that will give you an actual 1.5"
