I've been thinking about "smoking" my tails aswell...
But yeah, im pretty sure the easiest and simplest would be throw a very lite coat of black or dark grey on em..
If thats not dark enough keep adding very lite coats until you get your desired results...

Why give the police one more reason to pull you over....?check your local laws and regs, just cause other folks have them does not mean they are legal.

Do you mean to tint the actual lense of the taillights? Or are you wanting to paint the houseing of the taillight as your thread title suggests. By painting the actual housing I mean, removing the lense and painting the inside of the tail light and then putting the lense back on.

If you are wanting to paint the actual housing I think you are probably wasting your time since the lenses themselves are not clear you will not be able to tell much difference anyways. If you are wanting to tint the lenses just buy some spray tint off of ebay and use that. You want to clean the lense really good with alcohol or something similar and then apply a couple coats of the spray tint to the tails. Mine faded a bit on my Civic which turned out good because I liked them better than when they were really dark. IMO a couple of light coats would look good and shouldn't give the cops any reason to hassle you as the lights will retain their reflective properties. Some have clear coated them so that they don't fade as much.
